R Rated Movie: Im 17 and a friend is 16: can we legally do it?

I am 17 and my friend is 16. I am legally allowed to enter the R-rated movie, but am I considered a "guardian" and is he allowed to get in with me? Would they let a 16 year old in with a legal 17 year old? I'd rather do this the easy way instead of finding another way into the movie.

You buy the tickets earlier and give your friend one. Or buy tickets to a PG or PG-13 movie, then go into the R-rated movie. If you're the one buying the tickets, they probably won't ask about the age of your friend and just assume he or she is 17 also.
