Where do these things come from?

Sometimes

Now and then I awake smelling black powder

And tasting alkali dust- wondering why?

Once I floated above myself laying on a bed

Then was back in my body in a flash- perhaps a dream?

Was it a past life or Tarzan movies

That made Swahili come to me easily?

Or is it parts of things I know

Melding together to make a similar, newer life?

Sometimes I think love felt better

Than it ever really has- wishing vainly?

Am I remembering, or creating the legend

That will live after me among strangers?

Perhaps I am a character

In a poorly written tale with a vague ending.

I have danced with death

And basked in bright suns in dark lands.

Then I awake and decide it is but a dream

Yet miss the apparitions visiting in the night.

Update:

BG: Everyday when I learned it. Never now.

    Sometimes I think love felt better

    Than it ever really has

    what a very poignant statement.

    reincarnation...or an alter-dimension during dreams ? an interesting concept. I've just finished a short story/book by Patricia Gaffney called "The Dog Days of Laurie Summer" that gives a very interesting view of that, a good quick and amusing read. Nice poem

    Looking down from above and to the side

    I have viewed certain scenes in my life

    I tried to scream at myself, winds a sharp knife,

    running to nowhere on the night my child died;

    and in a beat up truck going over a Colorado bluff,

    my mom in trimester 3 and toddler Chris

    shut up in the camper shell, him screaming, "sis!"

    I swear I reached down and guided when road got rough...

    I was not yet 8 years old that snowy day;

    happiness faded from me like my innocence,

    I never quite recovered from it since

    my school, home and friends had crumbled away,

    and when I came back after a year of school missed

    I thought they would insist I be held back a grade;

    that's when my aptitude was tested and I was made

    a member of G.A.T.E. and a number high on the list

    of potential geniuses and my wits

    were honed on sorrows, sharp edge of abuse

    which today serves welll as lame excuse

    for why my mind is now chopped into bits.

    But skills like astral travel and the lucid state

    are part of the work behind the actuality

    of what we all share and can not touch or see

    that I do from quite a different gate...

    All I ever wanted was to return

    and regain all the chances lost- to learn

    a way to make tangible reward from my gifts;

    to make my own sustenance from wages earned.

    ouch that came out completely unbidden. Did you just voodoo me or something Shannon?

    true life story there.

    Everyone who's been where you have been seems to be haunted by dreams and thoughts that come unbidden. The smell of black gunpowder? HEY! You speak Swahili? COOL! How often do you get to use it, though? Oh, well, interesting write, Shannon!

    Very unique! I believe you create your complications and be humorous about them.

    So, in my esteem, this makes you self sufficient and an adventurer. Congratulations,

    even though I detected non apparent signs of your being a little hasty. Enjoy it to expand it!
