Can you eat crabs on Fridays during Lent?

I would like to do a indoors picnic for my wife tonight (yes, I'm sweet like that).

With it being Friday in the middle of lent, I'm not sure of the rules. She's Catholic, I'm not.

Are crabs and shrimp acceptable to eat on a Friday during Lent?

    Yes they are.

During Lent, we give up fleshy meats--fleshy meats are meats that bleed when cut (so pork, chicken, beef and so on). Meats that do not bleed when cut are okay to eat (fish, shrimp, crabs and so on).

For all those people with their stupid comments: Lent is about self-denial and self control. If we can voluntarily give up what is permissible, then it helps us to not commit what is not permissible. Yes, God is not going to cry "foul!" on someone who eats meat during Lent, but it does show a lack of control of oneself if one cannot even give up meat one day a week.

It is wonderful that you are sensitive enough to your wife's religion to do something like this and be worried about it to the point of asking on here. Have a wonderful picnic, I'm sure your wife will certainly enjoy it.

Yes, they are acceptable, but I would like you to consider the following:

The reason that Catholics give up meat for Friday is because meat is something that the middle class and rich can afford, but is considered a luxury to the poor. The poor go to the river and catch a fish to have protein. When we abstain from meat on Friday, we unite ourselves with the struggles of the poor.

Eating crab and shrimp, while in keeping with the letter of the tradition, does not really fit the spirit of the tradition. Crab and shrimp is not really something the poor would be eating. I suggest a more modest meal instead of crab and shrimp. if you want to do crab and shrimp, have that tomorrow night.

The be conscious "abomination" exhibits up interior the Bible fifty two situations, and only as quickly as is that be conscious attributed to fish. Leviticus 11:9-10 - those are the failings that breed interior the waters, and which it rather is lawful to consume. All that hath fins, and scales, to boot interior the sea, as interior the rivers, and the swimming pools, you shall consume. yet in besides hath no longer fins and scales, of those issues that circulate and stay interior the waters, would be an abomination to you. As you will discover, the Bible needless to say endorses the intake of fish. The Lenten Friday rapid is the abstinence from meat, yet this would not recommend that fish should be the bogus. nonetheless, there's a rationalization why fish is a properly-enjoyed substitute: FISH - image of Christ, considered in the previous the 5th century. The Greek be conscious for fish is ichthus, consisting additionally of the preliminary letters of Iesous, CHristos, THeou, Uios, Soter -- Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior. The fish is likewise emblematic of the fishermen Apostles, Andrew, Peter, and the Sons of Zebedee, whom Christ might make "fishers of adult males" (Mark a million:17). The archangel Raphael is in lots of situations represented with a fish introduced lower back to treatment the elderly Tobit of his blindness. FISH WITH BREAD - a logo of the Eucharist that became into early got here upon interior the catacombs and that's corresponding to Christ feeding the multitude. Above the fish, which represented Christ, became into in lots of situations a basket of loaves with a tumbler of wine interior a clean basket, the excellent components of the Eucharistic sacrament.

I think its funny that people think someone or something as powerful as God would concern himself with something as trivial as who eats meat on a Friday.

If God is that petty/simple than heaven must suck. Can you imagine. God will be like "No you can't do that.. I'll send you tell hell!"
