Help with choosing aquarium plants?

I have a 180 litre/40 gallon aquarium and was wondering what would be a good choice of plants? Im looking for hardy plants that are good oxygenators and will keep the nitrate/nitrate levels down in my tank. Looking for all types of plants from background, mid and fore ground.

I would choose Vallisneria (not the giant one) in the background, Cryptocoryne wendtii in the middle and some Java moss in front.

The Vallisneria will grow like wild if there are too many nutrients in your water.

The Cryptocoryne might look like it's not doing well for the first couple of weeks after it's planted, but this is quite normal. They're known to 'melt' a little whenever they're moved. I have some which in most of my tanks and they all come from a few I originally bought some 15 years ago.

The Java moss is very hardy. Fry and small fish often use it as a hiding place and female livebearers use it as a place to give birth to reduce the risk of having all the fry eaten by other fish in the tank.

If you can get hold of a handful of Guppy Grass (Najas guadalupensis), its a fantastic plant. In a new aquarium it begins growing right away. It's size can double in a week. It's probably the easiest plant to keep in an aquarium. Like Java moss, it's great as a hiding place for fry and small fish as well as a place for female livebearers to give birth.

well lots of things need to be considered, how good is your lighting? are you adding CO2? are you using fertilizers? if you going low tech java ferns and moss will work alright, watersprite is a good floating plant it can be rooted if the lighting is good enough, keeping healthy plants is actually more difficult than the fish themselves do some research
