iMac + iPad vs Macbook Pro?

I use adobe photoshop, illustrator, indesign, after effects, microsoft office 2010, iMovie, and Final Cut Express 4 (with Live Type) for Graphic Design and Video Editing. The problem is that I am currently trying to get by on the family's 1st gen Mac Mini with only 1gb of RAM. It's never going to, and never has worked. I need to buy my own mac...

Would it be acceptable / just as good to have a 21.5'' iMac at my desk with an iPad for portability, or should I just go ahead and go for a 15'' Macbook Pro?

Here are some options I've planned out (critique or add your own):

• 21.5'' iMac 2011, then purchase a 13'' Macbook Air in 2012

• 21.5'' iMac 2011, then purchase an iPad 3 in 2012

• Refurbished 15'' Macbook Pro 2010, then purchase a new 15'' Macbook Pro in 2012

• Refurbished 13'' Macbook Pro and a Monitor (not necessarily apple), then purchase a new 13'' Macbook Pro in 2012 (and would already have a monitor)

A lot of people have this issue of speed vs portability. Part of my issue is also Desktop + small portable device (ipad/mba/mbp) vs. only Macbook Pro. I seem to enjoy leaning towards the idea of an iMac for power and a Macbook Air for portability, however I can't seem to wrap my head around just leaving the Macbook Pro out of the question. I need some advise so I can have firm confidence in my decision...

For the software that you intend to run 1) forget the 13" macbookpro.

    Your ideal macbook would be:

    15" macbook pro

    2.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7

4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB - this is minimum - you can upgrade to 8GB with someone like Crucial which is much cheaper than Apple.

500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm - you need a faster disk speed than the standard 5400 rpm.

The main reason for this spec is the graphics capability and memory:

    AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 1GB GDDR5

This machine is a) portable and b) powerful - as powerful as the iMac and depending on the iMac specs, maybe more.

You can get a larger display for it to use on your desktop.

    Z.

The problem that I see is that you're doing tasks that require lots of horsepower. The Air doesn't have that horsepower. Even if the iPad did have the horsepower (which it doesn't), it isn't a platform that's going to allow you to accomplish the tasks that you're talking about. There's no Final Cut, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, or After Effects for the iPad.

The 13" Macbook Pro does not have dedicated video memory.

A 15" Macbook Pro is the minimum Apple platform for what you want to do; however, if portability is not essential, the iMac would be even better. It has much more horsepower than the 15" Macbook Pro.

I'm exactly in the same boat as you are....having the exact option and thoughts as you've mentioned above...

I think the only key is how important portability for you ?

In my case I only need portability around the house so I can move freely from one room to another or even take it outside in the patio ...but seems like 80% of the job can be done by an ipad...So now i am leaning towards iMac + Ipad...
