How come no raping or killing people after Japan earthquake and tsunami?

Why were there looting ,shooting and even raping during Katrina. What is the excuse for raping and shooting? I might understand looting food because they were hungry but shooting and raping ,i don't get it.

Unlike most of you, I`ve actually lived in Japan for the last 6 years.

People here are just raised to be part of the group, and to trust that the group will help all the members to the best of it`s ability. Kids are taught from an early age to think of how their actions effect others. They`re not perfect. They`re not doing it because of belief in Zen or "honour". they do it because they`re taught kindness and cooperation is better than the alternative.

In California, nearly all the police force in one city was stripped and crime rates spiked sky high. I would guess it's gang violence(shooting and raping).

Meanwhile, Japan has an almost uniform culture and a main religion called Zen Buddhism. Zen Buddhism stresses meditation and peace. This translates to peace following the destruction in Japan. The U.S., on the other hand, is a melting pot of all the world's cutures.

On a final note, if we all knew one another, there would be no violence.

Because they are a homogeneous society unlike so many others in the west. Compare Japan to the Haiti earthquake and the Katrina hurricane.

Poor people, it's a tragedy. But have faith Japan will overcome.

The Japanese people are honorable and dignified, unlike us spoiled Americans. It's so sad that here we are claiming superiority when in reality, if we experienced what the Japanese are experiencing, we'd be going nuts, wAiting for someone else to come and save us. The Japanese simply live by a better moral code than we do.

The people of Japan feel and honor the sense of personal responsibility toward the community.

Because they don't act like animals in Japan when faced with a crisis.

They already suffered an almost 9.0 earthquake, 6.0 - 7.0 after shocks for multiple days, most lost everything they had, people already died or are missing, why add to it?

Different mentality. With that one tends to handle similar situations drastically differently.

Cultural factors. I think David explained it best.

The Japanese people are far more civilised than Americans, which is why they're helping each other instead.
