Yes. I've used fondant on some of the cakes I decorate. Some people don't find it the most tasteful thing to use. But there are ways to flavor it. It is just a type of icing that you can mold like play dough. But the more expensive fondants or homemade fondants taste so much better than most you can buy from the store. I prefer to use candy clay though. I think it tastes soo much better.

Hi there. The answer to your question is simple.
Yes, fondant, being nothing but sugar and water (sometimes including gelatin), is edible.
The reason you almost never see anyone eating the decorations is probably because those people realize how much contact those decorations usually have with human hands. I personally do not like over-handled foods and thus rarely eat haute cuisine for this very reason.
Another reason that might contribute to you not seeing people eating those decorations is because they taste like CRAP~! Most of the bakers I know never flavor their fondant, as they don't expect it to be eaten.
So basically all you end up with is sugar, water, and gelatin with a bunch of human finger sweat kneaded into it. yuck.

Fondant is perfectly edible but it is nasty. It is like eating a sweet flavorless, unappealing tewxtured pste.
That is why I would Never buy a cake done oin fondant. All the time spent doing it, you are getting charged for then everyone peels the fondant off and throws it in the trash.
Waste waste waste.

the reason no one eats the decorations is the Environment Department has rules against show food from being consumed. In show foods and contest foods anything not eaten by the judges must be placed in the trash.
What? you think everyone likes the pure sugar of the icings and decorations if they are ove 5 years old?? Most people ignore the icings on cakes at restaurants, receptions, and other events too and it all goes into the trash.
