I want to build muscles, but my parents won't let me...?

(I'm a boy and) I want to go gym to build muscles and stuff, but my parents say its just for appearance and attention, so there is no need to build arm muscles...

How can I persuade them?

I've tried saying that It's for fitness. But they say: "Do cycling, swimming, running, for fitness. No point of building arm muscles"

Are there actually any benefits other than appearance and attention?

Update:

I'm 19 btw.

Update 2:

Thanks for trying mathew, but it didn't help me unfortunately. The thing is I've bought weights at home and can't use that as an excuse.

Update 3:

@Tracy John: You are a bloody retard. I didn't say that. That's just the way you took it. All I'm saying is that they are against this and don't want me to do it. I can obviously do anything. Its just that they won't like certain things if I did them. All I'm asking for is some persuasive tips on this matter.

If your skinny, like I am then say it's for building confidence around people and having a better physical presence.

If you're 19 though you should be able to do what you want, there's no harm in building muscle, in fact it's solely beneficial as it can strengthen your body and allow you to do things you weren't able to do before like rowing (arms and back), boxing (back), swimming (abs and legs), cycling (legs). In fact all the exercises they told you to do benefit from having more muscle.

Plus the bigger you are, the less likely you are to run into trouble. When I was 15 I did Tae Kwon Do (junior male county champion :D ) and even though I knew martial arts and told people about it (as we know gossip spreads like fire through school) I still got into fights because people thought they could 'overpower' me. However after starting to weight lift at 17 and getting the muscles, I had the physical strength and fighting skill...needless to say, nobody ever messed with me again.

As long as you let them know that being muscular and developing your strength will benefit almost every aspect of your life, I think they'll understand.

Depending on what job you want to get into, where you may have to lift objects that are slightly heavy. You could say you want to make work easier and less embarrassing to the people you work with.

fitness, like you said you have tried it but say that you cant go running, cycling etc outside cause its cold, raining or too dark a lot of the time which would stop you going.

They said go swimming, the gyms are doing a free Leisure trial for a while where you get free gym and swimming before 5pm. so you will still need to get a card, so say your going swimming, lift some weights and then go for a little swim. If they claim your getting big, then just say your toning up via swimming but after a while you may still have to admit going to lift weight if u get quite big.

Failing that, don't tell them, 'go out' with a few mates to play some football and go the gym instead, plus the footie is a good excuse for being a bit sweaty.

    Hope that helped.

Like has been said already. Push ups, chin ups, squats, sit ups (or crunches, whatever you prefer). They will do well for tone but you really need heavy resistance to build muscle. Ask them if they will not let you go to the gym can you get some weights to do in the house.
