Had McCain not picked Palin for his running mate in '08, would he have won?
I didn't pay too much attention to the election in 2008, but I've always wondered, how many Republicans voted for Obama/Biden just so McCain/Palin didn't win in 2008. Had he chosen someone more... well, competent, would he have beaten out Obama?

Nope, don't think so. McCain blew it when he stopped his campaign, rushed to DC and backed TARP.

That's what the entire Democrat caucus keeps saying, which is how you can be literally 100% certain the opposite is true.
Another way is to remember "way back" to 2008. Polls showed McCain so far under Obama he needed a separate chart. For all intents and purposes Obama was running unopposed as McCain appeared to be no threat at all. THEN McCain hired Palin and shot into the lead and STAYED THERE until his own campaign started undermining her and his numbers dropped JUST IN TIME to lose.

Probably not. McaCain was rapidly losing support before he announced the bimbo running mate.
Palin gained him a lot of points just based on the hormone reaction, but far more important was the money she brought to his campaign from the extreme rightwing religious leaders.
The McCain campaign was broke before he accepted Sarah as his boss.
They were hoping to have another fundamentalist puppet in the White House and they no longer cared if she was an Adventist, a Baptist or Pentecostal, just so long as she was a right wing religious extremist.

I voted for Carter in '76 .
I don't like Obama and if McCain had picked a normal person like Charlie Crist of Florida then I would have voted for a GOP presidential candidate for the first time in my life.
Normally VP candidates mean nothing to me But when faced with the very real possibility of McCain dying in Office of natural causes, his selection of a stupid ,ignorant, radical, right wing ,religious, nut job to be the next President was scary enough to make me vote for a guy that I don't particularly like

He would have had a better chance, but still highly doubtful. The majority was absolutely fed up and repulsed by the Republican party by that point, aside from the naive in denial. I even saw ''Republicans for Obama'' buttons during the race.

No but if Palin had ran in 08 she would of beat the pants off the schoolboy.

Actually, he would have gotten less votes. Many conservatives do not like McCain, she actually breathed some life into his campaign.

No because in 2008 the American people were in a honeymoon with Barack.

Not at all. There was a frenzy to vote for a "change" and nothing was going to stop that.

It would have been considerably more likely. Although, with all of the anti-Bush backlash, it still would have been difficult.
