Can you pick between a 60mm and a 81mm mortar?
I was planning on being a 0341 in the Marine Corps, and I was wondering if at SOI you can pick between a 60mm mortar or a 81mm mortar?

Once you complete the first stage of SOI (School of Infantry) you will then break into specific MOS's ie.. 0331,0352,0311,0341 and so on. When I was in we were asked what we wanted to do and based off of the amount of slots available they would weed out extras and either make you an 0311 or send you to another group of MOS's. They weeded out based off of current evaluations, performance and how "squared-away" you were.
That being said if you do get to be a Mortarman you will be required to learn both 60mm and 81mm. I ended up in a "Weapons Co" in the fleet so we were 81mm. The "Line Company's" in the Battalion handled 60mm. During the War (Iraq) although we were 81mm we also use 60mm for patrols.
Hope you can handle walking with a ton of weight on your back... Good Luck!

The 60mm is used at Company level, the 81mm and 120mm at Battalion level. If you are in the Company Mortar Platoon you will be using the 60, otherwise you will be using one of the others.

Good luck getting you choice, most folks wind up with 0311. Try to score in the top percentage on all your written tests, those guys usually get their pick. Lower scores do to, but it is pretty much all by luck for them.
