I keep hearing that most Americans don't have passports while most other people do?
out of interest, please tell me what nationality you are and whether you have a passport. If you don't have one, please explain why.
For starters, I'm British and I do have a passport

It's because when you are in America, why would you want to go anywhere else? America is the greatest country in all of human history.
People have passports so they can come to America, not the other way around.

because the only countries around the US are Canada and Mexico. If you are driving to those countries you use to not need a passport just an ID. Recently you need a passport for ground transportation, so more Americans are getting passports by the day. Also with the vastness of the US most Americans never leave the country let alone their own State.

I'm American and I have a passport and I've traveled abroad. But with that said, there are reasons why Americans tend to not have passports; America is a large country and there's alot to do. For example if someone in England wanted to go a tropical beach for vacation, he or she would have to leave the country, in the U.S. you can go the Florida Keys or Hawaii. If that same person in England wanted to go snow skiing, he or she would probably end up going to France since it's the closest country with sizable mountains. The point is that for leisure travel America offers pretty much whatever climate you can think of and hence there's no need to leave the country to get there. So unless you're interested in seeing the sites that can only be seen at specific locations, there's not alot reason for Americans to get a passport.

I'm British but now live in America. I can see why people don't really have passports over here. The country is so large and diverse that you can easily take vacations domestically. Workers get fewer holiday days and air travel seems far more expensive than in Europe.

I'm Dutch and live in Ireland, and I have a passport. They are almost a necessity in Europe because it is still different countries.
The US is large enough that people don't necessarily need a passport. It is comparable to Europe, size-wise, but without international borders in the entire country, a passport would mainly be a useless thing.

I'm american and I don't. I never got one because I've only ever gone to Canada which didn't start to require a passport from Americans until recently. All I needed was my birth certificate which was a lot easier. So why bother getting one if you don't ever use it?

I have a passcard. I'll probably apply for a passport some time. And this seems to be another subtle shot at Americans. Why do Britains or the English think they're smarter or more sophisticated when they have the Cockney and working class? They're the same as our working and lower classes.

I'm white/black I don't, my husband is black and he does so does his family they take a lot of vacations to aruba, bahamas, peru but as for me I have been to Grand Cayman Islands/jamaica on a closed loop cruise (basically where the boat started and ended at same port) but I didn't need a passport for this.
I want to travel overseas but I feel as if I should explore where I live first and I don't need a passport to go to cali, NY, or Miami.

I from the US and I don't. A passport is not as easy to obtain since 9-11 and it costs money. I have children, a job and I go to school. I don't have the time or money to travel out of the country so it is not a useful item. If I had the money to go somewhere I would go to Disney with my family and we don't need a passport.
I went to Jamaica and the Bahamas and you did not need a passport.
I think most Americans are in the same boat as me. No money to afford luxury travel and we don't have the time to go.

There's probably something to that, at least for European countries.
But, it's a little bit misleading. European countries are all so small. So, you had to cross borders to actually go anywhere, things have changed under EU rules.. but still, most people have it from before that.
In the US, I can drive for thousands of miles and still be in the same country. Makes a huge difference in how much you need a passport.
And yes, I do have one.
