Is that right? 1.2 billion? That's even more than I thought. They probably are coming close to the number of Chinese, then.

In developing countries, children are assets. They contribute to the household income, do chores, and provide value when they are of age to marry. Because of the high infant mortality rate, it helps to have more children to take the place of those who die (I know this sounds cold, but it's true.)

As medicine and science makes the life expectancy and quality of life go up in these nations, children begin to shift to the liability side of the spread sheet. Feeding and clothing a child adds expense; as does seeing to their medical and educational needs. Child labor laws further drive down their value because they can't be put to work as early.

At some point, people make a conscious choice to have children for their sentimental value rather than their economic value. In developed nations, the birth rate among educated, professional people continues to fall, and, even among the less-educated people the rate is declining.

Only two pressures keep the birth rates up in developing nations: one is a lack of laws providing for their education and protection; a second is religion, which is steeped in traditions that often lag centuries behind economic realities.

India is a great country, but considering the majority of the people still do not have normal plumbing in their homes...And many others live in extreme poverty; I would say that having more and more people added to the mix doesn't sound like a good idea

the Indian population is in decline because the government cannot cope with such numbers as so many are in poverty so the are adding mild contraception to many water supplies although they cannot ever admit to this for obvious reasons

    India?

You mean the country where the life expectancy is about 20 years less than in first-world countries? Where everything looks shitty and run-down and where every train crash seems to kill 800 people? Maybe, with your profound Hindu wisdom, you folks might realize that there's a VERY ******* STRONG CORRELATION BETWEEN FERTILITY AND GRINDING POVERTY. Got it?
