I'm travelling to the USA soon. Will I ruin my ipod if...?

I'm from Australia and I'll be travelling to the US in June and doing a self-drive tour around some of the western states. If I bring my iPod, will I wreck it if I use my adaptor bought in Australia to plug it into an American car's cigarette lighter? Also, will I need a "step-up" transformer to charge it in a motel room socket, or will it simply recharge very slowly (provided I have the correct shape socket adapter)?

Update:

Thanks for your help! I thought it'd be okay in the car, but one can't be too careful with pricey gadgets! Pricey in Australian anyway - iPods probably cost about as much as a box of cereal in the US.

Your car adapter will work fine since all cars around the world use the same 12v cigarette socket.

The car chargers typically give out the same 12V voltage around the world so you should be ok with that. As for the wall charger you intend to use in the motel room, take a look at the charger. It should have an Input Voltage range. If it says something like 100 - 240 Volts then you're fine. If it says 220 - 240 volts, then it won't work for you in the US.

The car adapter will be fine, 12V Worldwide, unless it's an old 6V VW beetle. Check the label on your iPod AC adapter. It should say 100V-240V. If it does then a travel adapter for Oz to US plugs is all ya need.

No. Both American and Australian cars have a 12 volt electrical system. The accessory plugs are identical.
