Is Wayne Gretzky the greatest athlete (in respect to his chosen sport) of all time?

I am not huge hockey fan but it amazes me the level of dominance that Gretzky has shown. I guess it was an offensive minded era but his seasonal numbers are 2x what is considered great right now. His records almost surpass the number 2 and number 3 greats combined. It's just absolutely nuts to think about. It would be like Kobe or Lebron averaging 65 points a game or Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees scoring 8 TDs per game.

Will any sport have such a dominating figure every again?

Edwin Moses in the 400m hurdles won every race he competed in between August 26, 1977 and June 4, 1987......122 consecutive races. In all, he ran the race 137 times between June 1976 and September 1988 and won 134 of them

No athlete in any sport can boast such a record!

No, considering I think that Bobby Orr was better, it is hard to put that moniker on Wayne.

I think Woods was on his way.....coincidentally, I always said that only a bad marriage or injury could prevent him from being the most dominant sports figure of any sport, and it was both really.

Although I think you have to classify team sports and individual sports differently....my vote would probably go to Michael Jordan.

I would also have to disagree, it isn't like someone averaging 65 points per game or scoring 8 TD's per game, it's all relative, Gretzky had some great teammates and he played in a high scoring era. Sure, there was domination but not to the extent of Orr IMO........leading the league in scoring a couple of times- AS A DEFENSEMAN, having a season where you were a +124, six straight seasons with 100+ points in a lower scoring era than Gretzky. That's domination.

I did an identical element! I had a historic previous essay for who became the best Canadian and that i chosen Wayne Gretzky. in case you may not think of of three explanation why Wayne Gretzky is the best Canadian athlete you certainly would desire to come to a decision on somebody else. BTW at the instant is his 40 eighth birthday, some thing you in all risk wanna incorporate on your essay.

I don't think Gretzky was the greatest hockey player ever - that would be Bobby Orr - so no, I don't think he's the greatest athlete in his chosen sport. Gretzky benefited greatly from the era he played in.

In all sports, I still believe that pole vaulter Sergey Bubka was the man who stood farthest above his piers. In his prime he would let all the other competitors compete then come out and do one jump higher than anyone else and win the gold.

I think so. He is more dominant than Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Barry Bonds, or Jerry Rice ever were, which says a lot.

The only athlete I can think of that might be more dominant in his respective sport is Michael Phelps; but we'll see if he can maintain that godlike status during the next summer Olympics.

Well if you look at Stats...Gretzky is the greatest ever...and pretty much Stats are the only thing people care about...You also can't argue with stats. You have a lot of what-ifs but no real argument....If best and most dominate on stats alone....Gretzky is the man.

hockey in those days is way different than today. have gretzky play hockey in these days and u wont see those stats where he scores like 90 goals and 170pts or wahtever. hes one of my fav hockey players but sitll he aint the greatest athlete for sure

he was the best of all time. every superstar coming up is compared to 99. ive even seen gretzky drop the gloves and fight a flyer named rob dimaio. no other athlete could dominate their sport like he did. maybe tiger woods in golf

Yes, he is the best of all time. No, no sport will ever see someone who dominates a game the way he did.

he was the greatest. the difference between him and orr, lemieux, or even crosby, is gretzky never got hurt for a long period of time, like crosby is now. (still a crosby fan though).
