Good place to live in Baltimore?

My wife and I are moving to Baltimore for school this summer (U of MD- Baltimore). Any suggestions on good places to live? We're probably going for a one or two bedroom apartment, and were hoping to find something safe and reasonably priced.

BQ: I've heard nothing but horror stories about crime in Baltimore. Is it really that bad?

The horror stories you've heard are probably from Baltimore City. The surrounding areas aren't so bad.

Now I'm not sure when you say U of MD- Baltimore, if you are referring to the Baltimore City school or the Baltimore County Campus (UMBC). Either way, the farther away from the city, the safer. (Of course there are exceptions). Baltimore County is generally a safe place. If you are attending the city location, you may want to check out MTAMaryland.com to see where the Subway and Light Rail stop. (just don't pick a spot near the city).

If you are attending UMBC, the Catonsville, Ellicott City, and Columbia have some nice areas.
