propagate pine tree from cone?

I have 6 pine trees around my home and wonder why I am not growing little pine trees all over the place since they drop cones all the time. My reasoning for asking is to find a way of getting some saplings to grow. I live right near a high way and figure that instead of spending a few hundred on some new pines I could grow my own as a sound barrier. Using the cones how can I get a pine tree to grow?

It takes many, many, many yrs. for pine trees to grow. Your best bet is to try to transplant seedlings from other areas, like the woods- or buy some already started. Plant them in acidic soil with plenty of mulch or they won't make it.

Step one is to determine the exact species of pines that you have. There are thousands of species in the Pinus genus. Many pines propagate in different ways. Some cones are never fertilized, others do need heat like in a fire, some need water from a monsoon season, some need to be frozen, some need the seeds removed, and digested by mammals or birds etc, etc.... It is useless to try until you know what pines are there, and how their breeding cycle occurs. there is a high chance that they are non native pines and an insect or animal is missing from the fertilization process, or an element is missing from the germination process. most landscape pines are foreign transplants. sorry I wasn't more helpful, but why lead you on? Get researching about those trees or ask again with pictures, location, and more info. Good luck.

If the cones have fallen then they probably have no seeds in them. You need to pick the cones before they open, before the birds pry them open so you can get the seeds. An alternative is to go to a nursery that specializes in tree seedlings. If they are only about a year old they are quite inexpensive.
