Fellow Christians...Have you seen this recent news item? What's your view on it?

News item regarding the University of Maine and the new semester:

Over the next month, Dining Services will be testing a pilot program that uses a scan of an individual’s palm in place of his or her MaineCard. The program uses infrared technology to recognize the meal plan user’s palm and links that image to that person’s MaineCard account.

“Instead of swiping your MaineCard, the program is going to identify you by the palm of your hand,” said Benny Veenhof, director of technology management at UMaine. “It takes a snapshot of the veins and creates a black pattern that it then converts into an encrypted algorithm.”

Update:

I add this for the ones who wondered where I was going with this. I see this as another confirmation that prophecy and technology are in sync, so to speak. I realize the differences between this and the mark of the beast, but the similarity of the techno aspects are obvious. For the one who thinks that the mark will not be a literal mark, when the time comes, you will not be eating "literal" food, according to scripture. It has to be literal, if it is to be a means of buying and selling, which it is. This is a spiritual battle. It's not about the "scary" old Bible. It is about life and the Truth of life. Yea, I know, another crazy fundie....and very grateful to God for being so.

    Hi elyon.

What you are saying has validity. I think this is just a first step...to get people familiar and comfortable with the idea of having their hand scanned, in order to make a purchase.

The frog in the boiling pot scenario shows that introducing heat in small increments, over an extended period of time, the frog will stay put and eventually die. As the frog, we are being acclimated to accept what is being given, step by step.

I worked with this technology a little, and I can answer a couple questions that have been raised:

    1) Why not use fingerprint? - With the palm reader, nothing gets touched, you just hover your palm above it. With a fingerprint reader, people touch it, which requires cleaning and spreads germs.

    2) Why not use retina scan? - not 100 percent sure on this one, but I'll guess that positioning an eye for a retina scan takes longer than hovering a hand over a vein reader.

I do know that a dead/severed hand cannot be read, but maybe a removed eye could be. Not that people will go to those extremes for a meal, at least I hope not...

Are you talking about the Mark of the Beast thing? We've all been social security and account numbers for decades now. Where have you been? Actually, I can see an advantage to this. I give my kid my debit card and he forgets to return it. I get to the store without it and have to go back home to retrieve it from him. The card on a key chain, swipe and go, is sheer genius.

Fyi, the mark of the beast is not an actual card or number. It simply means that the Lord knows who is his and who isn't. Compare it to Revelation 7:1-3 and Eph 1:13, the seal of the Holy Spirit. Rev 13:16-17 calls the mark of the beast the number of a man.

You are kidding right? I work for the Federal Govt, and I will tell you that many of us have had to use the scanner for several years now...I don't get your analogy with this...If it were to produce negative or sinful results , I could see your concerns , but this only validates and confirms the culprit who otherwise might have been taking advantage of someone else...Unless you're disappointed because you were using someone else's meal ticket and now you know you won't be able to?

You want to express concerns and doubt about something, try investigating the Federal Govt and ask yourself why so many people have invested so much money on so many ridiculous and unnecessary demands from a lazy and carefree Public and the same few populace is supporting all this rhetoric.

I highly doubt that the university would use technology without understanding the safety precautions needed. Therefore, there is no need to be afraid of it. As far as religiously, which it appears that you're asking, I see no way that goes against what we believe. In fact, the understanding that we are each unique creations of God seems only to strengthen those ideals.

As a Christian, and this is just my opinion, I'm not the least bit intimidated or interested in what's going to happen after the rapture. It's not being heartless just don't care. The time is now to repent, accept the Lord, and have your name written in the Lambs book of life.

Any linking with the "mark of the Beast" is ridiculous.

The mark is clearly something that must be * accepted *. My digital handprint was not accepted by me ... it * is * me.

Plus, this mark must be taken in some sort of decision that allegiance will now be directed to this or that person/government.

None of that is present here.

That sounds like we're in the Tribulation already. Those who know what is going to happen will not like this. I heard of some other things that sounded similar too. The policemen in the UK were getting chips imbedded in them. This kind of thing is what the antichrist is going to use to control all the people in the world. So, if we are in the trib. then so be it. All those who thought the rapture comes before the trib will be astonished, right?

I don't like anything that tracks my information, especially biometrics. It's just another step towards a cashless society that will utilize the mark as predicted in Revelations.

No I haven't, but somewhere around page 1,000 of Obama's health plan, he is introducing a bill to put a subcutaneous chip implant under the skin in your hand with all pertinent medical information recorded, starting next year, starting with the oldest people first, and working down.

Are these signs of the times? And why do mockers laugh at the Bible when it said these things would happen?
