Liberals, explain this to me?

A commenter by the name of “Smug Liberal” gave me this definition about conservatism. “Conservatives by definition either want things to stay the way they are, OR want things to be like they used to be in the past. They don't like change. Why in the hell would any minority want things to be like they were in the past? Think about it. Minorities want change and acceptance. Conservatism doesn't really offer that, but liberalism does.”

Do you agree with this?

I haven’t heard one conservative of legitimacy make a claim to return to the days of slavery or Jim Crow.

I contest that conservatives believe in preserving the founding PRINCIPLES of our great nation, not the founding PRACTICES. Why do liberals resort to these “catastrophic ends” arguments anytime a conservative wants to reform something that is clearly broken in our system, like our debt for example? How am I wrong on this?

Hawk, why do conservatives have that name? It's because they want to "conserve" what already is, and not have change, which liberals see is for the betterment of society. I never mentioned slavery or Jim Crow, but make no mistake, in the South there ARE conservatives who would like to go back to those very things. Minorities are much better served by liberalism, therefore it's no mistake that they gravitate to that political philosophy.

I agree to an extent. I don't think all conservatives want a return to the past, but conservatism by definition is interested in keeping society and the social order pretty much static.

"I haven’t heard one conservative of legitimacy make a claim to return to the days of slavery or Jim Crow."....Trent Lott came pretty close to it.

Anyways, it is all well and good to be upset with our debt now. Were you in favor of the Bush tax cuts? Were you in favor of launching a war against Iraq and not paying for it? When "conservatives"were in power, they did little to reign in the deficit.

For the most part you're right. But you seem to be forgetting that two "Conservatives," Bush and Reagan, racked up HUGE deficits in their respective Administrations, mostly in huge military buildups. And now, they're complaining about the very same deficit that they so happily piled up when there were Republicans in the White House.

    Reform debt, LOL?

Because most of the time you guys only ***** about debt when its going to the poor. When it goes to the Military - Industrial complex you say its "patriotic. When it goes to morally corrupt billionaire bankers you call it "needed to save the economy."

You guys only stand on "principles" when those "principles" seem to coincide with making the poor or minorities poorer. But when its making the rich richer, you're "pragmatic" or "patriotic."

Basically, if you didn't just base your ideology on some invented view of the 1950s where black people and gays stayed on their side of town and then used the federal treasury as one big tax giveaway to the ultrarich, nobody would question you.

    But guess what?

You forgot to mention, that the conservatives, starting with Reagan, nailed this nation with a now unpayable debt, because of their military exploits and funny Reaganomics dribble effect failures.

No, I don't agree, because its inaccurate. But lets not pretend that political demonizing is one sided. Its part of the game, unfortunately.
