Dog ate my son's guinea pigs?
So of course on Easter, we have a family party. One family member brings their dog, which is a husky and has been known to eat hamsters and such. Anyways, the husky was supposed to remain outside. Somehow, she got inside. The dog ate both my nine year old son guinea pigs. I didn't want to make a huge scene so I haven't told him yet. I just don't know what to do. Is this a "learning" experience or should I hide it by buying new guinea pigs?
Hey KELLINA and ZOO.... F u c k you.

It would probably be very hard to find guinea pigs that precisely match the size and coloring of your son's pets, so he is sure to suspect something is up. It would be better if you tell him they got sick (being eaten could be a bit traumatic) and arrange for him to choose his own guinea pigs as replacements. Don't pay for them though; that should be the responsibility of the careless dog owner.

lol... I'm sorry, I don't think it's funny that your guinea pigs died, it just reminds me of when I was a kid and our cat ate my guinea pig. Also, as somebody who has owned sled dogs I'm quite familiar with the husky prey drive. My rescue husky was a cat eater when I first got him.
Unfortunately this is typical in huskies. They have a very high prey drive and as such small animals like cats, rodents, chickens, etc are frequently seen as toys or something to eat and tragedy is usually the outcome. These dogs are quick enough to chase and catch squirrels and rabbits.
I'd call it a learning experience. Explain it to your son, he's certainly old enough to understand. Explain that dogs are dogs and while the dog should have been trained and handled better, it probably never should have come to your house to begin with. With multiple people around people probably just were too distracted to keep track of a dog.

While the easy thing to do (If you can find exact replica's of your son's old guinea pigs) would be to quickly replace them, I honestly would say this is one of those 'learning experiences'. I used to have a Rabbit when I was younger, which ended up being eaten by local Foxes when I was 6, and it was actually the first time I experienced losing something I cared about. I honestly think it'd be beneficial to just tell your son the truth, rather than lie to him about it. Small lies turn into bigger lies, and eventually, you've got a whole mess that you really don't want to have to deal with.

Guinea pigs are so much different from hamsters, they have different personalities. I would first of all suggest to the family member that dogs do not need to visit your home with them, especially because of the incident. Then sit him down and explain what happened. I think it will a learning lesson, he might cherish pets and feel more responsible for them in the future.

If your son is young enough to not really grasp the idea that his guinea pigs died, then you can just tell him that they passed away because the easter bunny gave them too much chocolate or something like that....try to add a little creativity to it. Then i'd just go buy him another guinea pig if you can.
If he's a little older, i still wouldn't tell him that a dog ate his guinea pigs because that's a little intense, but just say that they passed away from old age. and it makes it special that they passed away together because one couldn't live a single without the other(: but i'd still go buy him a new guinea pig if possible.
good luck!

Unless he's very young your son is going to realize those aren't his GPs, especially if he's used to handling them and they suddenly aren't acting the same way. Tell your son the truth. Accidents happen and death is a part of life.
Yeah melson because telling a kid the EASTER BUNNY killed his pets is far more less traumatizing than the truth.

Buy new Guinea pigs if they find out that the dog at them the might resent the family and the dog because they might let their hatred for the dog leak into their feelings for the family members

I'm really sorry about that. I would recommend telling them because you shouldn't keep things from your kids. But I would promise them that you'll buy them new ones and appoligize to them too.
