Does having a SUV with selectable drivetrain (2W, 4WHI, 4WLO) help you out with gas mileage?
Getting a SUV, only need 4WD in the winter, and with gas prices shooting up, would a selectable drivetrain help with gas mileage??

R3DSKORP,
I have read you questions about the fuel economy that is associated with an AWD vehicle and a vehicle that has the drivetrain that you can select. From my own personal experiences, I have found that I do get better gas mileage with my truck which has the 2WD, 4Hi and 4Low selections.
In the past, I owned an SUV that had the AWD and it didn’t get as good fuel economy as my current truck. However, with my experience, I only noticed up to a 5 mpg difference between the two vehicles that I owned. Please, take into account that driving styles and proper maintenance of a vehicle will also play into the fuel economy.
When you are at the dealerships you can also talk with their sales staff or their techs about this too. There is also a website that will allow you to compare the fuel economy of a wide variety of automobile manufactures vehicles. The information on this site is from the government.

Yes. I own a couple jeeps, one is newer and is always in 4wd, so.it uses more gas and I own a little older and I can switch it when I need it for snow or mud. It saves more gas when its in 2 wheel drive but will use more in 4wheel drive and 4low is only for going under 10 mph!!
