Christians, how do you explain this Biblical contradiction?
Christ's genealogy, according to Matthew, was 28 people long from David to Christ (through Joseph, despite the fact that Jesus was supposedly born of a virgin, but that's another question entirely).
However, in Luke, the genealogy from David to Christ involves 43 people.
The version in Matthew leaves out such people mentioned in Luke as Heli, Levi and Amos.
@Devin: "they aren't contradictions, they are just another persons take on the story"
I don't disagree with you, but according to most Christians, the Bible is the INERRANT word of god. By definition, you shouldn't have 'different takes' on the story.
@Q&A Queen-
Mary wasn't important "in those days"? Wasn't she supposed to be the Mother of God's son??
Also, please quote the passage that states that it was Mary's genealogy, rather than Joseph's. Seems to be a pretty convenient rationalization to simply declare the two gospels aren't talking about the same genealogy, when it's not stated explicitly.
@Sarah: "thats just names not being mentioned coz they dont need to be"
So the INERRANT word of god simply left a bunch of names out in one telling of the story? Your bible is looking less and less "inerrant" all the time.

"i am an artiest, but you have to understand the bible is a story told from many points of view. they aren't contradictions, they are just another persons take on the story"
Possible but on the other hand.
Not knowing during which emperor's rein Jesus was born is imo a pretty big error, lol.

Genealogies do not necessarily have to include every single person in the family line, especially 1st-century Jewish genealogies. Matthew's genealogy was arranged a certain way, in groups of 14. It seems to mainly mention the more well-known individuals. Luke seems to be a more direct genealogy that includes all or most members of the family line.
Additionally, it was rather unheard of in the day to attribute a genealogy to a woman, as it records the male's family line. When a man married, he inherited the genealogy of his wife; so in as sense, yes, both genealogies are Josephs, although genetically speaking the Luke genealogy is Mary's.

The two genealogies split at the two sons of David. In Matthew, Solomon. was the ancestor of Joseph, Mary's husband and in Luke, Nathan is the ancestor of Mary, who bore Jesus, God's only begotten Son.

Yall are making me more Biblical than I normally am today on here.... Matthew tracked Jesus lineage through his Kingly line, using some grandfathers to show the line of desent instead of using every direct desendant. Luke tracked his lineage as a direct line.

Simple. One is through the line of Joseph, the other through Mary though she isn't named because women were not considered important in those days.
ETA: Yes. To christians she was important. However, the purpose of having both of those genealogies listed was to establish Jeus as "the one having the legal right" as was prophecied that the messiah would be. Legally, women didn't matter.

One genealogy is from Mary's family
The other is from Joseph's family
