Newborn already sleeping 5 1/2 hours at night, will this decrease my milk supply?

Our baby is 3 and a half weeks old and already sleeps between 4 and 5 and a half hour stretches at night.

We had a TON of trouble breast feeding and have just now FINALLY made a break through after going to the breast feeding clinic twice a week since birth.

I'm worried that his long stretches of not eating at night will decrease my milk supply so I have been getting up and pumping in between.

Is this even needed or will my supply be ok ?

Most babies who sleep longer at night tend to feed a little bit more throughout the day to make up for the feeding they missed. Is your baby nursing 8-12 in a 24 hour period? If so then you are probably fine but if he isn't nursing that much then you may want to pump a little. If you had problems with milk supply I would at least pump at this time for another 1-2 more weeks. If the problems that you had were not related to milk supply than enjoy your sleeping.

Overall no it is going to no longer slash the volume you are making at every feeding. Breast feeding is a give and insist kind factor. If your little one is not eatting at the ones hours then your frame will step by step no longer make milk in the course of the ones hours, the leisure of the time will probably be industry as natural ... but when all of a sudden your little one begins waking once more annoying milk, your breasts will meet the call for. That's additionally a nice solution to get a few within the freezer, while you wake within the mornings, you are going to be somewhat extra engorged than natural. You can feed little one after which pump a few milk for garage. Good success!

  • I bought an excellent book "Save our Sleep" by Tizzie Hall... and she says not to go any longer than five hours during the night without feeding cause it could disrupt your milk supply, but then i asked my midwife and she said never to wake a sleeping baby - so i was thinking of pumping too if my son sleeps longer

I breastfed my son for only 6 weeks, cause i gave up thinking i didnt have enough milk... i think my main issue was letting him sleep for long periods at a time when he was newborn... i am researching all i can so i am successful breastfeeding my next son - the book i got really has helped me learn a lot

    good luck

Continue getting up to pump if the baby isn't feeding at night.

I usually wake up on my own when my boobs are ready to explode. If you have trouble getting up, set your alarm to around 3-4 hours after you go to bed.
