I'm sorry to hear you had a day of ignorant tightwads. I remember the days of getting 25 cents for a $6 lunch, $2 on a $40 meal. And I've been doing this long enough that I know I'm a good server, it was the area I was waitressing in. Also to add to your rant, my worst tippers were the rich, like lawyers. They have the money, but it seemed to be their disdain for someone who CHOSE such a lowly profession. I'd get comments like "Maybe you should have gone to college." Hi, I did, and graduated with honors, idiot.
I do however understand the customers who thought dining out was a huge extravagance, a real treat, and tried to tip as best they could. They could be excused, it was the regulars who had no clue.

You didn't ask a question. Instead you are giving us a lecture on tipping etiquette. However great you were today as a waiter with those people they didn't tip you. That's life. Do you ever get a great tip that astounds you making up for the ones who stiff you. That probably has happened also. It's hard to judge every situation but these days money is tight and they may be penny pincher's. It doesn't help you get the tip you deserve but don't let it anger you either. Work hard and smile often. Do your best and be thankful you are working. Look for a better opportunity as you gain experience. A more expensive restaurant will be your future gift to bigger tips. Also, some restaurants have a policy of sharing tips. perhaps you can implement this procedure. Get everyone to be great at their job.

You didn't ask a question. But I feel ya. I am also a server, and I work at an Italian place. We do a casual, family friendly thing. We also do a lot of carry-out pizzas. And it irks me that i have to STOP waiting on my tipping customers to answer the phone, punch the order in, ring it in when the guest arrives, grab the pizza and the stupid condiments he might need---and no tip. What really gets me is I am taxed on my SALES, so I actually paid to take care of that guy.
That said, please start keeping track of your tips. Last Tuesday, I made $22, but Thursday I made $104. At the end of the week, I average out what I made in a week, and at the end of the month I do the same. I know in 2009, I AVERAGED $86 a day in a four-hour shift, and in 2010 I AVERAGED $78.
Barry> how does lousy food have ANYTHING to do with the tip?
- 1 decade ago
I agree people do have this false notion that servers get min wage and then tips on top of that, whichs is not the case however, I do not tip based on the food because the server isn't making my meal, I tip solely on the service and usually tip 20% or more but if it isn't even good service I will tip 10% or less. Sorry, those people stiffed you.

TIP equates as "To Insure Proper ( some say Prompt ) Service". That said, when done, I always tip a minimum 20%. But if the service is lousy, you will be lucky to see more than 5% from me. Especially if the food is just as lousy as the service.
