I started my sprinkler system for the first time this spring, and the pipes made a horrible knocking sound.?

It only does it on some of the areas- the front lawn, the side of the house drip system. We don't having problems with freezing or anything like that over the winter. Any ideas what might be causing it, and suggestions? I don't really want to call the sprinkler guys if it's something simple, but I also don't want to damage the system.

The manual troubleshooting guide doesn't have anything about the pipes, not surprisingly. It's a Rain Dial RD 600 control system.

Thanks.

This is actually called the water hammer effect, It's caused by sudden water pressure traveling faster than the speed of sound through the pipes making the loud knocking. Ive been doing irrigation for 10 years now and this is very common.

It's just pushing the air our of the pipes. Let it run for a few min to get the air bubbles out, then it will be fine.
