Prednisone withdraw? Is this normal or am I going crazy?

was recently diagnosed with adult onset asthma and the inhalers weren't controlling it completely so I was given an injection of a steriod. I was then told to take prednisone for a few days. I had to take 20mg 3 times a day for two days, then 2 times a day for two days then once a day for two days then I was done with the pills. When I was on the pills I had terrible side effects Including:

-Insomnia

-extreme mental confusion, foggy brain

-very hungry

-extreme anxiety, paranoia, and panic attacks

-back pain

After the last dose of prednisone, I had more side effects like:

-migraines

-indigestion, diarrhea, nausea

-back and knee pain

-hives all over my face, and chest,

- a return of eczema, and depression.

After a few days most of these went away, but now feel lightheaded, chills (no fever), intestinal pain, diarrhea (three times today), and nausea. And I keep crying.

Is this withdraw from prednisone even though it's been days since the last dose? I told my doctor about all these symptoms as they occurred, but since I was on a short dose they have basically said there is nothing they can do. Is this normal? When will the effects from the drugs go away? I've also had a pain in my right side where my ribs are and was told it was probably bruised ribs from coughing so much earlier. I feel that these problems and being brushed off by doctors who have basically told me to grin and bare it. Is there anything I can do to help myself?

    This is not normal. Speaking from experience, I think the asthma attack that couldn't be controlled by inhalers is a traumatic experience. This has caused me to have a lot of anxiety even after the attack was over.

    That said, here are the side effects from Prednisone, I'm sure you will find some of your symptoms in there.

    Prednisone side effects

    Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction to prednisone: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

    blurred vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights;

    swelling, rapid weight gain, feeling short of breath;

    severe depression, unusual thoughts or behavior, seizure (convulsions);

    bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood;

    pancreatitis (severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea and vomiting, fast heart rate);

    low potassium (confusion, uneven heart rate, extreme thirst, increased urination, leg discomfort, muscle weakness or limp feeling); or

    dangerously high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision, buzzing in your ears, anxiety, confusion, chest pain, shortness of breath, uneven heartbeats, seizure).

    Less serious prednisone side effects may include:

    sleep problems (insomnia), mood changes;

    acne, dry skin, thinning skin, bruising or discoloration;

    slow wound healing;

    increased sweating;

    headache, dizziness, spinning sensation;

    nausea, stomach pain, bloating; or

    changes in the shape or location of body fat (especially in your arms, legs, face, neck, breasts, and waist).

    Some of the problems may be do to the asthma medicine if you're taking high doses. The effects of albuterol sometimes go away and you can continue to use it.

    Go to drugs.com and find the medicines you're taking. Read about the side effects, some can be serious and some not so serious.

    I've been on and off prednisone multiple times because of Crohn's. I would have a severe flare up and lots of diarhea and stomach cramps with vomitting, take about 40 mg of prednisone and feel completely normal by the evening. I would then only take about 30 mg for a few days, and then 20 for a couple of days, and have been on 10 mg for a few months at a time. My GI doctor is supposedly the best one around my area in Indiana, and I have never been above 40 mg in a day and no more than just a few days. I'm not a doctor, but it sounds to me like you are on, too, high of a dose. I'm 160 pounds and 6 feet tall. The only symptoms that I have experienced because of it are increased appetite and fast pounding heart. But, weight gain and water retention are common when you take, too, much. Just like my cousin did for her Crohn's disease. After being on just 10 mg a day for two months, my heart rate was quite a bit above my normal as was my blood pressure.

    DO NOT STOP TAKING THE TABLE I REPEAT DO NOT!! if u stop the prednisone without weaning ( gradually the dose going down over time) it will cause A LOT of damage to ur body (eg kidneys shutting down etc) prednisone is a very dangerouse steroid and only used in emergencies ( in ur case it is) it take about 6 months to ween off the table so im sorry but u will have to put up with it for the next couple of moths or so. it seems that u might be allergic to the steriod but even if u are the doctor will not want u to stop it untill u have weened off it.

    Source(s): im have cystic fibrosis and is currently on the steroid, i get arthritus in my legs and hips and my hamstrings get tighter and tighter till they snap when im on it and it is terrable but i still have another 2 months of it because the specialist have told me the effects of stopping the steriods without weening is much more terrable then the pain i am feeling now... trust me just stay on the tablet and maybe just buy so nausea tables etc
