Alamo hire car in Orlando. Upgrade on reserving or at airport?
I am hiring a car from Alamo (through Virgin) for 16 days in July and was wondering whether it would be cheaper to pay the higher rate now (for an intermediate car) or book an economy and then upgrade at the airport.

Book for the car which you want on the airport don't shuffle your preferences later on as it might cause trouble as the you ask for later on can be available or not. So book the same car which you intend to hire.

If your trying to save money then stick with a compact. American compact cars are much bigger then what your used. to. Unles you really want to have a little more luxery during your stay. If you take a compact and find that it does not work for you during your stay. You can always go back to Alamo and exchange the car for an upgrade. Most of the time its not a huge price differnce

Whatever you do, the agent will try and convince you to upgrade at the airport. Try and resist: we hired a compact, about the size of a Ford Focus, and the agent tried for ages to get us to upgrade, saying it would be too small for the three of us. It was fine, of course.

we got stuffed the first time we rented a car, got charged nearly £400 for the upgrade, extra insurances we didn't need, breakdown cover and sat nav. second time round we were not prepared to get ripped off and got an upgrade for $10 per day, which in my opinion was still too much. this year we've just booked the 4WD before we go, the pice difference was minimal. i'd advise upgrading before you go.

Just about all rental car employees get part of their pay from the up grades they sell. They never sell anything for the benefit of the consumer, whether it be upgrades or insurance.
