If your 11 month old baby had to have 2 stitches cause of your dog biting what would you do? put dog to sleep?

this is not my dog or my baby, just asking others what they would do. here is the situation... a 2 year old lab that is food aggressive bit an 11 month old, baby had 2 stitches, the owner of the dog is the adoptive mother of the baby. the animal control stepped in took the dog for 10 days, dog is current on shots. but she has been ordered by court that dog can not be brought back in the house with the baby.. shes loves both the baby and the dog, she has had the dog since he was a puppy,so this is extremely difficult on her. so here is her choice..... let animal control put it to sleep or hope a lab rescue takes him or have a family member take the dog. no family member is in a position to take him, she only has 5 more days and does not know any friends that is willing to take the dog. i am family to this person, i have 5 dogs of my own so me taking the dog is out. what is the best thing to do? i know she has to put the baby first, there is no question to that . so put him to sleep or what ?

Update:

i need serious answers only. I SAID BABY COMES FIRST! we live in nc and she is allowed to get the dog out just can't take it back home with her.

Update 2:

we love animals as much as the next person as i said i have 5 dogs, i have 4 cats and 2 birds. she has 6 cats and including the dog in question she has 2 dogs, she had 4 dogs but got homes for the 2 puppies when the baby came in the pictures, since they were puppies they went back to original owners.

Update 3:

it was not feeding time, the bag got turned over and spilled out. they took the dog to quarantine it for 10 days, even though it has had shots, it is a law in nc.

Update 4:

as i said i can not take it. i have 5 big dogs myself. i have 2 mixed labs and 3 golden retrievers.

The animal control came and took the dog for ten days-what are they doing and why is there a ten day limit? Are they doing temperament testing on the dog, to see if it human aggressive or if it only food aggressive?

If it is only food aggressive, then it can be worked with and adopted into a family or single owner that can work with the dog. Since no family members can take it and it obviously cannot be in her home anymore-I would say contact Labrador rescues near you or no kill shelters near you and ask if they can take the dog in. If not, then the only option would be to have it be put to sleep. I'd highly suggest that you and the original owner of the dog try to contact rescues or no kill shelters in your area and see if they can take the dog first.

To be honest, this situation could have been avoided if the owner of the dog and parent of the child made sure the child wasn't around the dog when it had food/was eating and if a trainer/behaviorist was hired to work with the dog and it's food aggression(before the child came into the picture preferably)

I would be calling all the Lab rescue groups in the state I lived in, to try to get one of them to take the dog and re-home it into a home that doesn't have small children.

The dog shouldn't be put to death because the owner of the dog didn't use due caution and allowed a toddler around a food aggressive dog at feeding time.

  • I would be asking why the heck the parents were letting an 11 month old baby near a food aggressive dog.

I think it is her fault that her dog bite her son .she should have keep her baby in a crib when she was feeding her dog .most of the dogs dont like sharing their food .so I think she should ask someone from the family to take her dog n tell them dat she will provide them with every thing that her dog needs including vet visits n medical expense, doing that she wont have to put her dog to sleep n be happy that she will be able to see her dog ....next time dont feed ur pet when ur baby is in the same room as ur dog, atleast hold ur baby when ur dog is eating

Aw. I'd take it to a shelter or something. Or you could take it? I have four dogs and if I saw a dog that was being put to sleep for being a dog, I'd get it. I really wish you would get it and keep it until you can find it a good home. Go on craigslist or something. :-)

If she can find a rescue that will take a known biter, then he should go there. I hope she has slapped herself hard for allowing this to happen at all. If she couldn't take the time to train the dog, then how does she imagine she'll find time to raise the child?

Have her take the dog to her local animal shelter.

Most states require the dog to be put down.
