Failed medical school finals..?

Hello... my boyfriend just told me he failed his fina exam. He was supposed to graduate in two wks from medical school but he won't be able to do so now. He told me this in the middle of an argument over the phone, and he suddenly started crying and calling himself a looser... then he got off the phone. I've never seen him cry before. My question is this...

1. How do I console him without being pushy?

2. What are his options? Can he retake the finals or repeat the year? (this way I can use these options to encourage him not to give up, when I talk to him)

Thanks in advance...?

Which country is he studying med school in and has he already "matched" into a residency program?

The issue isn't too much that he failed an exam in a course because it's likely he will be able to do an extraordinary exam which should still let him graduate in time but if he can finish the paperwork and process before the first day of residency.

It's too late in the year for that residency position to be given to someone else so it would end up staying empty. No degree, no legal possibility of starting residency until at least next year. If he doesn't move fast and try to finish the paperwork before July he will have to participate in next year's match and who knows if programs will view him not doing his matched residency for x or y reason unfavorably.

If he matched into a competitive program and was forced to defer, he might have to console himself with a subpar program in a rural region. Once you graduate and match in a residency nobody in the real world really cares what your GPA was (I've never had a patient or coworker seriously ask me that question), but failing to do his residency in time might be a huge problem in the future. Without a completed internship and passed Step 3 he can't really use his MD degree nor re-valudate it in a foreign country.
