Was Luton Town in the Premier League?

Or did they drop to Division 1 (Championship) the year before the Premier League started?

If so is this the biggest fall from grace?

Update:

Why look at Leeds, Luton Town fell further then Leeds for goodness sake.

And Leeds are on their way back if you had not noticed.

Luton have a chance to have football league next season too if they beat AFC Wimbledon.

Oxford have fallen just as far. Both they and Luton won the League Cup in the 1980's and were in the top flight just over 20 years ago. Leeds might be considered a bigger fall from grace due to appearing in a Champions League semi final just a decade ago.

P.S. I think Spike is talking about Northampton not Hereford. They went from Division 4 to Division 1 and back again in 9 years during the 1960's.

No. They were relegated from the top flight the season before it became the Premier League. Still a fairly spectacular fall from grace considering how decent they were, certainly in the mid/late-eighties.

No they dropped year before. Look at Leeds for a massive fall from grace.

No, - Luton Town, (whose best-known fan, was the legendary, late comedian, ERIC BARTHOLOMEW, - better, known, by his stage name, "ERIC MORECAMBE"), - NEVER played, in what we, now, recognise, as the Premier League.

But, - if it's a "KANGAROO" Club, that ya looking for, - think, about a Club, from the MIDLANDS of England,.- THEY, being HEREFORD UNITED.

In LESS than a DECADE, - 7 years, in all, I believe, - they went from FOURTH division, to FIRST division, - and BACK again.

I have NOTHING, whatsoever, against Hereford United, - I idolised one of THEIR former players, - striker, PHIL STANT, whilst he played for PART of his career, at MANSFIELD TOWN, F.C., - but, personally, I would LOVE to see "A.F.C. WIMBLEDON" in the League, - because, the people FROM that area, haven't had a Club, since the former "WIMBLEDON FC", changed their "persona", - and, their NAME, - calling themselves "MILTON KEYNES DONS" - ("MK DONS")
