Making new couch covers, which needle and thread should i use?

I'm making a new couch cover and its my first time. Silly question, but should I use the "upholstery needle, and upholstery thread" for the sewing purposes? And additional tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. My base theme is just plain white, since i plan on decorating my living room with other bright colors. Thanks.

Anything I know called an upholstery needle is a hand sewing needle. Don't try to put one in your sewing machine. Try a #18 jeans needle. If your machine doesn't handle a #18 needle (check the manual) then this is not a project for your machine.

Upholstery thread larger than v69 nylon will tear up the tension in your household sewing machine.
