If a player retires with a year left on their contract and wants to unretire, how would that be handled?

Hi

If a player wanted to unretire in a year or two how would that be handled? Example being, will Detroit on Rafalski's rights forever now?

Thank You

I THINK that they have his rights for one more year of him playing (like they did with hulder) I would assume that the dont get paid not to play and so the contract just always has one year left on it...

I believe the team with the contract has the choice of whether they would take the player or not. If they automatically were put on that team, Detroit would likely be pushed over the cap by Rafalski's return, but couldn't trade him because of his no trade clause, meaning Detroit would be screwed because of Rafalski's decisions.

  • Yes, the team retains the rights until the player has been active for the entire term.

Not forever. Just the length of his contract, I think.
