How long will my cat stay in heat if she has mated?
So my cat was let out of the house today by my 2 yr old son she has been in heat for about 2 weeks I finally found her in the bushes about 4 hours or so after she got out when I picked her up a very unhappy tom cat came running out of the bushes to find her he was crying up a storm and followed me the whole way to my door I'm almost 100% sure they mated but she is still walking around crying and rolling around on the floor...also my male cat has mated with her as well (hes fixed) and she's still acting like she's in heat. And yes I do know people that she should be fixed I just don't have the money right now just had a baby...
i do have money set aside for her to get fixed but just not enough yet i do know that taking care of kittens is costly but not as costly as getting her fixed sad thing is i cant get the low cost spay for her because my hubby makes to much money i have looked into it i do know how to care for kittens because she was a rescue kitten i got at 4 days old i just couldn't give her up i feel in love with her personality i am concerned for her i do not want to have kittens but what is done is done and i cant take it back ill just have to wait the 3 weeks and hope that shes not if not then i should have the money to get her fixed i will not abort the kittens that is out of the question i have family and friends that would love to have a kitten added to there family
yes it scares me to get her fixed but i do understand that it needs to be done there are way to many unwanted cats in the us and it kills me to know that because i love my animals and i really wish that i could help all the other ones that don't have homes like my baby (Lilly) she would of been put down or died if i hadn't of taken her in and raised her
@ Ocimom if you read anything on here you would know that i am currently saving to do so...i can not get low cost spay because my hubby makes to much money and to top it off if my female is pregnant then im not and will not abort her litter i find that as animal cruelty just as i am against it for humans as well so before you start typing how about you read everything i have wrote on here

She can stay in heat for a few days or more even if she has mated. Mating a few times as she has probably done doesn't stop the cat's estrus.
But having mated doesn't absolutely guarantee she will be pregnant. Cats are very inefficient with their mating and may mate many dozens of times with several tom cats with no fertilization having occurred. The cat's body doesn't "know" when fertilization has happened as when it does it is a few days before the new zygote has implanted in the cat's uterus.
You are no doubt asking because you are concerned about pregnancy and the safest wager is to assume that she IS pregnant though.
It is going to cost a lot more to deal with the cat's pregnancy and resulting kittens than it will be to get her spayed. So you DO need to get her spayed asap whether you can afford it or not. You will spend more by not getting her spayed.
It need not be costly to get a cat spayed. Less than the cost of a pair of sneakers.
Google "low cost spay neuter cats" with the name of your city, town, or county and you should find several options.
Update:
Most places and programs that offer low cost spay services do not require any income verification at all. I have had many cats spayed or neutered at clinics that offer their low cost services to everyone regardless of income.
Spaying at this point after conception would not even be considered a spay/abortion because technically the cat is not yet "pregnant" even if conception has occurred. The products, if there are any, of fertilization are zygotes floating down her fallopian tubes (or whatever they are called in cats) and have not implanted in her uterus. Not even embryos. Only undifferentiated dividing cells.

FIND the money to spay her NOW. Call around to local shelters to find vets that do it for lower costs. Its FAR more costly to have a litter of kittens then to spay a cat - because if she needs a c-section or other medical complications during pregnancy or birth it will run you $1,500+. Do you have that money?
And raising kittens with extra food and shots for 3 months is more costly then spaying her. Get her spayed now. It should only cost you less then $150 for spaying. The longer you wait to do this the more costly it will be.
She can remain in heat and breed for a few more days. Don't waste time - if you can afford a computer and internet, you can afford to spay her.
Added: - to the poster - "lower cost" doesn't mean you have to qualify for lower costs - it means you find a vet that is lower cost. In our area there is one that charges less then others no matter what - check around. It WILL cost you a heck of a lot more to raise a litter for 3 months and if she has problems in delivering you are looking at $1,500+ for a c-section alone. You complain you have no money, yet what will you do IF she needs a c-section to deliver those kittens. Do what you want but its too late to cry about her dying when the emergency arises because YOU don't want to abort the kittens now. Those that have no money can't afford a medical emergency. Better think long and hard about your decision.

I was told by our cats vet that cats will stay in heat until they are either fixed or they mate and get prego. Our prego cat was in heat off and on (last for about a week or so, then leave for a day or so, then back again) for two months--until she mated and got prego! Once the babies are weaned, tho, she is being fixed! We also have to get the other one fixed so we won't have another litter of kitties.

Hi Dani, I completely understand that you dont have funds to get her spayed, and it was not your fault that she ran out (i hear house cats when in heat run out). You hit the nail on the head and realise what will be will be.
If she has kittens, then heck, nothing you can do about it, but if she does not, then hopefully you will have enough funds to get her spayed.
I think you are a totally responsible owner, you have your tom neutered, and you will get your little girl spayed as soon as.
Mine is getting spayed on Friday, and believe me, i am at high door, cos my baby is going under the knife.. yelp! :(

Cat will stay in heat until she is defineatly pregnant and willc ome out of heat about 14 days after she goes into heat.longer if she doesnt mate, shoeter if she successfully mates with 2+ tom cats. likelyhood is your cat is pregnant and if you cant afford to neuter her how cany ou afford to look after kittens? cats can have litters of on average 6 kittens all will need food, mom needs kittenfood while lactating, all will need vet check and flea and wormdoses and to be fed. bring your cat to an animal shelter and aska bout neutering schemes, ring your vet and ask about sponsored neuter schemes, often run by rspca or other animal welfare agencies.
