In 1969 was it a hoax or did we really go to the moon.?

It is said that there is an overwhelming amount of evidence that proves the trip was never made, and actually done in a remote studio. During the cold war,,the defense department's goal was to somehow show show soviet communism that we had rocket technology for ICBM's. Lastly, we know that the Van Allen belts would fry any living organism to a crisp even at great distance from it. What really happened?

Update:

This is how the question was presented to me and I wanted to get everyones opinion as to whether or not it was a fake or even possible to fake. My belief is that although it could have been simulated, it was not and we actually did set foot on the moon. Yet I wish the other claims could be discounted, but some of them do stand durable

There were six successful manned missions to the moon. I always say that the BEST evidence for doubters is this: Russia and the US were in an intensive and expensive space race to the moon during those Cold War years. Both sides despised each other. Yet, the Russians conceded defeat that the US beat them to the moon (the USSR tracked every single mission--there and back of US space craft). If we had been perpetrating a hoax, the USSR would have been ALL OVER the US by revealing and discrediting any bogus claim of landing on the moon. The USSR was able to get equipment to safely touch down on the moon (including a robotic rover; betcha didn't know Russia has abandoned equipment on the moon did you?), but they just couldn't get a man up there before the US did.

Then there are the tens of thousands of people and scientists who worked on the missions. It isn't even feasible that all those people could participate in a conspiracy and coverup and keep it secret all these years. Hey, but to each his own. The evidence is there and if you want to turn a blind eye to facts, then it's your choice. Oh, yeah...forgot to mention that left a device up there that is still being used by scientists here on earth. It's a mirror that reflects laser light to determine the moon's distance from earth

    >>In 1969 was it a hoax or did we really go to the moon.?<<

We really went to the Moon. In fact in 1969 there were three flights to the Moon, two of which landed on it.

    >>It is said that there is an overwhelming amount of evidence that proves the trip was never made, and actually done in a remote studio.<<

Yes, that is said a lot. It is not remotely true, however. All the 'evidence' that it was fake is no more than cherry picked clips, misinterpretations, lack of understanding, ignorance of much of the other evidence, and even outright lies.

    >>During the cold war,,the defense department's goal was to somehow show show soviet communism that we had rocket technology for ICBM's.<<

Yes indeed. Can you think of a better way to do that than to ACTUALLY develop such technology? The rocket was a mature technological achievement by 1969, and we had been sending things into space since the 1950s. What was so impossible about landing a man on the Moon that would require the incredible political risk of faking it?

    >>Lastly, we know that the Van Allen belts would fry any living organism to a crisp even at great distance from it.<<

No-one who understand anything about radiation and the van Allen belts knows any such thing. First of all, particle radiation can't kill you from a great distance: you have to actually be exposed to it directly. They are dangerous to unprotected organisms, certainly, but putting the astronauts inside a spacecraft makes for pretty good shielding. The type of radiation in the belts is best shielded by light metals (such as aluminium) and plastics. Guess what the Apollo spacecraft were made from....

Furthermore, the belts are just that: belts. Since travel in space involves movement in three dimensions, it was quite easy to design a trajectory that skimmed the egde rather than passing through the most intense regions.

    >>What really happened?<<

The US really pursued an expensive and incremental program of space flight that evolved logically and directly from sending single-pilot capsules into orbit, through complex manoeuvring, rendezvous, docking and EVA practice, to eventually landing men on the Moon.

Yes, they did. There are things on the Net which could make an unwary person think there were no Moon missions, including a supposed lack of any disturbance of soil under the lander and the wrong shadows. Or at least that's what the spoofers say. Most seem to know better, they simply enjoy misleading people. Some even fake up and alter footage etc. and post it on YouTube.

Actually, the things that "tend to disprove" it are simple things that the hoax believers just don't understand. Go to clavius.org or badastronomy.com and they will explain what the Moonhoaxers misunderstand. Then go to Wikipedia and search for "third party evidence of Apollo". Yes, they really went to the moon!

The shadows aren't wrong, for example; people simply don't understand what they are seeing. Go out in the Sun, and look around. Objects in the distance will seem to be casting shadows at a different angle than your own shadow. Your shadow will change, if you are on raised or lowered ground. When people see these identical things happening in the Apollo pix, they think it means the pix are faked!

As to the dust under the lander... the engine was barely ticking over on landing, and literally pushed on the lunar surface far less than a leaf blower pushes on your sidewalk. It blew away a lot of the dust, leaving the hard rock layer beneath undisturbed. People think the engine should have drilled a crater underneath, but your leaf blower doesn't leave craters in the sidewalk, does it? For some reason people look at the maximum output of the engine, as if this had some bearing on what was going on at landing. Your car may go 80, but you don't do it in your driveway, do you?

There is NO proof of a hoax, or conspiracy. None whatsoever.

Anything you read that claims otherwise is either wrong or flat out lies.

The hoax theories exist purely to sell books and DVDs to people without sufficient knowledge to spot the blatant falsification of evidence, however, there are many thousands of scientists, and engineers who are qualified to examine this evidence, and you will not find a single one who thinks the Apollo Moon landings were faked.

Your comment on the Van Allen belts shows that you have no understanding of them. Even their discoverer Dr James Van Allen agrees that they present no impediment to space travel (see link).

If you have any other specific questions about the Apollo moon landings, or the hoax theories, post them here. There are many knowledgeable people in the Astronomy and Space section who are qualified to answer. Please keep an open mind (a real open mind, not the conspiracy believer kind)

Does it matter? What part of your life would be changed if they hadn't? I personally believe that we did, but I've been wrong before and the government has lied to us before. Honestly, they very well may have not. The U.S. really needed to put the final blow on the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and this would have been an excellent opportunity. It would have been so much easier for them to swear the astronauts and scientists and workers to secrecy, shoot a manned-rocket into space with a return course, fake the landing in a studio, and get some rocks from a remote land and sterilize them of life. Mythbuster did this, by the way, and were able to create a very convincing replica moon landing without the billions of dollars the U.S. government had.

    No, its not a hoax.

~ Tens of thousands of people contributed to the manufacture and assembly of the spacecrafts.

~ Hundreds of thousands of spectators watched the rockets take off.

~ Video and stills were transmitted during the trip and from the lander on the surface of the Moon. These were not coded and could be (and were) received by many stations on the Earth.

~ Hundreds of pounds of Moon rocks and detritus were brought back.

~ 2 unmanned soviet missions and 3 manned U.S. missions left reflectors on the Moon.

~ 18 unmanned spacecraft landings on the Moon through 1976.

There were six manned Moon landing missions. In total, twenty-four American astronauts have traveled to the Moon, with twelve walking on its surface and three making the trip twice.

There is a wealth of information and proof for the Moon landings. If real proof is ignored, what would be accepted? Answer: No proof no matter how strong will convince those who refuse to accept it.

    What proof would convince you?

Even though there is proof that we didn't there is more proof that we did. If it did not happen I'm sure we would have known about it by know, it happened 42 years ago I'm sure some thing would have leaked out by now. So end result we went to the moon.

I just see this moon hoax thing as a gullibility test, a test that many failed.

Just watch Mythbusters the moon landing special

We went to the moon. Only prolonged exposure to the Van Allen Belts can be deadly. The astronauts were well-protected and through the Van Allen Belts within an hour or two. You receive more radiation from an X-Ray.

    > What really happened?

We went to the Moon. Six times. It's an historic fact, not a matter for opinion or debate.

The six Apollo Moon landings are among the best documented events in human history: thousands of pictures, hours of video, 382 kg. of Moon rocks, and millions of eye witnesses, including myself. There is not a single scientist in the world who doubts that they took place. To deny them is to discredit the magnificent achievement of the team which went to the Moon, and to reveal abysmal scientific ignorance.

The proofs of the Moon landings have been documented in detail on web sites like these:

    http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/tv/foxapollo.html

    http://www.braeunig.us/space/hoax.htm

    http://www.clavius.org/

If further proof is needed, NASA recently released images from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter showing 5 of the 6 Apollo landers, still on the surface of the Moon:

This shows you the power of these conspirators. There is no overwhelming evidence. We landed on the moon and that is fact. This just like most things the government has been involved in has sparked conspiracy theories. Plus, you can't really fake something of this magnitude.
