Could I keep my German Shepherd-Border Collie puppy inside for a while since we have coyotes around?

I will be getting my puppy very soon and i was wondering about him staying inside for a while until he was older because of the coyote problem around where i live. we have no fenced in area for him. We cant afford anything like that right now but i was just wondering about that.

Your 6 week old puppy that you're getting too young? Yeah...coyotes will eat him for sure and it's your job to keep him safe. But you said earlier you already have an adult Golden Retriever...you don't have a fence for him either? I'm betting at this point you're just trolling for whatever enjoyment you get out of it.

You definitely should keep your pup inside and even as an adult dog. Coyotes run in packs and no dog can survive an attack by a pack of coyotes no matter how bit the dog is. Sometimes a pack will hide and send out a female in heat to attract a dog and when the dog goes to the female the pack will attack and kill the dog.

I live in an area with a high population of coyotes. Coyotes have lost their fear of people and where I live they have come into yards and grabbed a small dog within 6ft. of the owner and were gone with the dog. There was also a time when two people where walking their dogs off leash in the forest around us and one dog saw a single coyote. He ran up to the coyote and four more coyotes came out of the bushes and attacked the dog. Coyotes are smart and fast and with this said your dog needs a minimum 6ft. fence but keep in mind coyotes can jump but less likely.

Coyotes, or not, a puppy should be supervised, while outside, all the time. I have to wonder why you would get a puppy, if you don't have a fence? Do NOT get this puppy if you cannot afford a fence to keep it properly contained.

We also have a coyote problem, and my grown dogs are supervised at all times (we live on a large amount of acreage), and they are contained on the second story, of our three story house, in the house and on the deck and their yard they use for taking care of business.

In the meantime, get out the rifle/shotgun and start killing off the coyotes. We've picked off a few, as well as some of the neighbors. We got the one who killed an adult sheep and a lamb.

SAMMY: Coyotes usually do NOT run in packs. A single coyote will not take down a guardian dog, llama or donkey, nor will they take down a larger pet dog.

Don't get a puppy if that's the best life you can provide for it. The pup should live inside the house with its family. This puppy will have a very short life span if you dump it in the yard where coyotes can get it.

Leave the pup where it is and buy a garden ornament to leave outside in the yard.

We have coyotes where we are too and I don't let my 6 yr old pit out by himself! I saw the aftermath of when two coyotes attacked a 4 yr old english bulldog and let's just say all we found were bits and pieces of my friends beloved pet. I would definitely say YES keep him inside until you get a fenced in area or be willing to make him a inside dog and be sure to watch him.

Yes, you can keep your puppy inside. But not for to long. If he needs to "go" bring him on a leash and as soon as he is done go back inside and play w/ him. Puppies cannot be alone for a certain amount of time, they could get tangled in something, be hungry, etc. But the coyotes will defiantly eat your puppy. Best of luck!

My pup was almost eaten by a coyote. My dad chased it away thankfully.

    That should answer your question.

I still have to be careful with her and make sure she doesn't run after them. Because she is an

    outside dog.

My last dog left them alone. I didn't have to worry about her.

( MANY times coyotes DO run in packs, At least in BC they do)

He should be supervised at all times when outside, puppy or adult. Your dog, even as an adult, will be shredded by two or three coyotes.

When outside, he should be on a leash or chain, with someone out there with him. If this isn't feasible, then I don't recommend getting a dog.

Many areas have laws against leaving animals outside. In my area, the most one can leave their animal outside is 2 hours, but in the mobile home park, the owners have to always be outside when their animals are outside. Of the areas that don't have such laws, more and more areas are passing laws like that, so keep up to date with that.

Yes you should. And I would not let the pup out alone if coyotes are in the area at any time - even when he's grown - he should be supervised outside.

Our police chief poo-pooed the idea of coyotes in the city attacking dogs till one came up and tried to take his cocker spaniel while he was out walking it on leash! Made the news, I'll tell you!

Keep your puppy close and supervised by you, he'll be ok. Once he gets large enough (adult size) he should be fine tied out without you watching over him.
