    Good evening RidiculousIycurious,

I hope you had a great day. Ridiculouslycurious, it is totally impossible for anyone to tell you how much lime to put in your soil. Your lawn may or may not need lime. How do you know your lawn needs lime? Have you tested your soil? You could actually destroy your lawn by adding lime, if lime is not needed. This condition could lead to increase growth of weeds, fungus, and insects.

I try my best to explain how important soil pH levels are to gardening. A person can care for, water, and fertilize their gardens/lawns all they want. But unless the pH levels are correct for that type of vegetable, plant, or tree, they are wasting their time and energy. Proper soil pH levels are the key to making GREAT gardeners and beautiful lawns. I have enclosed two of my favorite websites for you to read. The first site verifies my answer and explains why you would use lime. The second website is important but the last paragraph writes about pH levels in the soil. Remember that lawns grow best at or around pH 7.0 which is neutral.

Most, not all, trees, plants, and vegetables prefer slightly acidic soil. Lime raises the pH levels. I would strongly advise you to buy a pH Soil Testing Meter from one of the websites above. You can also buy a cheaper meter at Home Depot for approximately $8. The meters are very easy to use, and they will last you for years. They also measure the nutrients in your soil. The meters require no batteries or electrical outlets.

If your soil is too acidic for your lawn, no one can tell you how much lime to add. Changing your pH level can take months or years. I wish I could tell you more, but I would only be guessing without knowing your soil’s pH level, buy that meter before you do anything.

If you find that you do need to add lime to your lawn, there are three (3) difference types. Buy the “Dolomitic lime”, and wear a mask when you apply to your lawn. The website below explains how to apply. MAKE SURE YOU USE A SPREADER. Otherwise, your lawn will come out totally uneven. You should always apply any type of fertilizer to a lawn using a spreader. VERY IMPORTANT you read and remember step #4.

I am an organic gardener. I have nine (9) rare fruit trees, a 20x20 feet vegetable garden, and a huge back and front yard with dozens of flowers and plants. Therefore, I have to continuously test my indoor and outdoor soils.

Because of your name (smile), Ridiculouslycurious, What is lime/Trace Elements? When I was a little fellow my uncle made me read a book. The man wrote the book from twenty (20) years of studies he made on KENTUCKY soil. The man’s name was Albert Carter Savage. His book is entitled “Remineralization: A New Basis for Proper Nutritions”. I never forgot that TRACE Elements are nothing but rocks which have been powdered (lime is nothing but crushed limestone) into soil by wind and rain.

Remember gardening is not easy at first, but the knowledge you gain is knowledge for a lifetime.

I am trying to get approval to purchase and plant a “Peanut Butter Tree”. I cannot wait to taste a fruit in a year or two.

You and your family have a beautiful week. Peace, from Los Angeles.

I watch the farmers where I live in Maryland and they put lime on their farms in the spring. I hope you have properly evaluated the need for lime and how much. I evaluated my yard and it said that I needed Iron. Good luck on the lime.

From what I know lime neutralizes acid or PH levels. So you would want to use as needed.
