How do I maintain 1055 carbon steel?

Somebody bought me a sword made of 1055 carbon steel as a gift. I don't know what to do to keep it from turning black over the years. I left all the original oil on it and nobody is touching the metal, but the metal parts of the sheath are starting to darken.

Just keep it oiled and it will stay like new indefinitely. I use a lubricant on the ways of my lathe called Way Oil #2 the lathe is over 40 years old but the ways still look like new.

I haven't seen any in several years...If you can find some try COSMOLENE grease...You may need to polish then blade with 6000 grit cloth
