Clutch has gone. How much is it going to cost to fix?

I have a 2006 Corsa 1.2 SXI+ Twinport. The clutch has been creaking for a while and just now it has completely stopped working. There is no resistance when you press the pedal and it's impossible to put into gear. The brake light on the dashboard has come on (the one that comes on when the handbrake is on which it isn't). There's a trickle of liquid down the road which I assume is clutch fluid. The AA have said they will be here in an hour and a half.

How big a job is this to fix and roughly how much should it cost?

Can the AA do it at the roadside?

If not, will Kwik Fit be able to sort it out or do I need to find somewhere different?

Is this normal wear and tear (I've done over 100,000 miles in it since new)?

Or is it a sign that the car is on its last legs? (I also had to get the water pump replaced two weks ago and the electric window regulator replaced a week or so before that).

Anything you can tell me would be really useful.

Update:

@Chris: Fair point, but it was gone 1830 when I broke down. There are no garages open near me at that time of evening. I had already phoned the AA and was really just curious to find out more about it whilst waiting for him. I always like to know a little bit about a subject, especially if I'm going to be charged money for it at some point. Also, I was only asking for a rough figure - "couple of hundred" or "over a thousand" would have done. Just so I've got an idea how much to budget for and whether it's worth paying for the repair. And so I know whether the mechanic is robbing me blind!

Stay away from kwik fit, cost you a fortune, small garage about £270, vauxhall agents double it, Pete above, its cable clutch

Try to shop around and get a few quotes because the job will cost between £300 - £400, you get some back street garages who will do the job cheaper and properly...

Places like kwik fit will totally charge you extortionate prices its best to keep away from those type of garages.

The AA will not be able to replace a clutch, their's is a get you up and running, not a large job like

that.they will tow you to a garage or probably back home.

Do you have your vehicle serviced?each year? Next job will be a cam belt.

    don't bother with Kwik-fit,

find a local small garage to do the job,or your own if you have your motor serviced....

cost ....do not know, ask before you book it in,total price...no"surprises"

Probably cost about £300 from a good local garage. It's a 3-4 hour job so the AA can't help, and don't go to KwikFit either, go to a real garage.

By the time you've logged on here, typed this question out & waited for answers, you could've rung a few garages. Why people think they can get an accurate price for a job like this over the internet is beyond me. Prices differ greatly from cheaper components to higher quality ones, dealer labour rates to local garage cash in hand..

You may not have a big problem. It sounds like maybe you have air in your clutch slave cylinder.

For instructions on how to properly bleed air from your clutch, see links below.

Personally, I never use a franchise type auto repair place. Many time the "mechanics" there are just kids under the supervision of a mechanic.

Best to get a personal referral from someone you trust to a mechanic that your friend can vouch for.

AA will not be able to fix it.

A clutch is lucky to last 60K miles.

Depends on the overall state of the car. that is a high mileage for any car, let alone a small car like yours.

it will have to go into a garage and it will depend on if you choose to get a proper part but it will be around a couple of hundred pounds and vat will be included as well as labour so it wont be cheap
