What benefits do ex-presidents of the United States get, and do they get them if they resign?

Seems kind of unfair that all technically one has to do is; be a natural born citizen over 35 years of age who has lived here for 14 years; get elected; and resign the day after inauguration!

You get Secret Service protection for 10 years (used to be lifetime, but that was changed 10 years ago). You get a pension. You get office space and a small staff. You get postage paid, to certain amount, official business only. You get lifetime periodic national security briefings.

about the Secret Service protection. It used to be lifetime. Clinton will still receive lifetime protection, if he wants it. Bush will not, nor will Obama or any other future president; it's limited to 10 years...unless there is still an ongoing and existing threat, but would require the approval of the current president.

Nixon resigned rather than be impeached because he knew if he got impeached he'd lose his benefits. Presidents get a retirement plan with lots of money, plus the govt. spends a lot of money beefing up their home for security, plus they get Secret Service protection for the rest of their lives. They also get a library to house their books and papers, but the library is usually built with private contributions.

One thing they will have for the rest of their lives is security. That's about it. And privileges to go White House events.
