Can I recharge an air conditioner on my Grand Prix?
just purchased a used 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. The climate control system is functioning. Well, I should say the blower works. I just need to get it charged with freon. Evereywhere I call around me wants $120-$175. (Auto Zone sells cans of freon for $25 each.) Is there a way I can possibly do it myself? If you can give me any instructions would be GREATLY appreciated!

I strongly recommend you pay for professional service now rather than risk paying the $600-$900 later for compressor replacement. It is far easier to damage the compressor by overcharging the system than to decently charge it. I see so many questions here saying "I charged my A/C last week and it is blowing warm or hot air now... what should I do?" In the days of R12 it was easy to charge A/C systems, but R134a is a whole different story.

Well you certainly can but if you want to have AC in your car, I advise not to.
The AC is a closed system and if it needs refrigerant (not freon) you have a leak in the system and adding refrigerant is more difficult than just throwing your money in the trash can but it will get the same results.
Go see a certified AC technician and pay the price, or pay the price for a six month course in automotive AC so you can fix it all.

you could do it yourself but you could overcharge and damage system. i would suggest you try 2 12 oz cans or 1 lg one with the Gauge follow instructions on can and be careful if you unit works the compressor Will come on and system will start cooling. wait a couple days to see if it leaks out. this will tell you if your system works first before you spend the dough to find out your compressor is gone. if it works then take it and get it professionally serviced and leaks fixed so it will last.

It will cost a lot more to fix it if you screw up and blow out a line or damage the compressor. If you don't know what you're doing, then leave the job to the professionals.

I think you are not a professional in this. Then you should not do it by yourself.
You have to contact a qualified mechanic to complete the job.
