Is it weird to use wine bottle for wedding table vase?
So...we are on a budget and wine bottles were free....would it be weird to use a clear wine bottle with labels removed with a single hydrangea in it on wedding reception tables ? (there would also be scattered votives and bottle/vase would be sitting on a centerpiece mirror..

I don't think it's weird. Wine bottles do look like vases so I don't see anything wrong with using them. Plus it gives you a chance to be creative in making your own centerpieces. You can decorate wine bottles almost anyway you want. You can add ribbons around the top (that are your wedding colors).

you could buy the kind with the screw top so that they remain closed but are easier to open by guests. If not, i would say keep the sealed, having a bottle sitting open would be weird, and if they don't drink it then there's just an opened bottle sitting there all night. Also, it could spill. Mostly, I think I would just feel weird if the bottle was sitting on the table open. Leave a corkscrew somewhere for them to use

why would you remove the labels? i would leave the labels on the bottles and put one hydrangea blossom and a piece of ivy trailing down the bottle with it. although, if it was a wedding i was doing, i would not use hydrangea for the flower but something like sunflowers or even some pretty wild flowers picked from the road side the day before. something like the white queen anne's lace, the blue cornflowers, the orange tiger lilies, or any of the many flowers that are to be found on the road side.
hydrangea is better suited for a compact looking bouquet and would look a little top heavy in a wine bottle. ditch the center piece mirror. too old fashioned and out dated. if you want it to sit on something, try using some inexpensive fabric from the fabric store as a runner. cut it about 8 to 12 inches wide. if you get fabric with does not leave a jagged edge (ask the store clerks about this) you don't even have to hem it. you can use anything from a nice print to a pretty piece of lace to as shimmering voile.
or even a wide ribbon, like 6 inches to 8 inches wide would work. let it hang down to the floor. if you use ribbon, you could drape a piece down each side, letting it criss-cross in the middle where you wine bottle will sit. then add a few votives and you have a stunning table for nearly nothing.
you can even use some good tree branches in your wine bottles. or a combo of branches and flower like the very prolific crepe mrytle that grows everywhere in the summer. it has great looking branches and lovely flowers and someone you know is sure to have some in their yard so you can get it for free.

No I have seen tons of pics with wine bottles as centerpieces. I'm thinking of doing something similar at my wedding except using vintage glass bottle. With the wine bottles you can also put a label on it with the table number. Below are examples of how people have used wine bottles.

I don't think it would be weird at all. We were thinking of getting a mixture of brown root beer and actual beer bottles, soaking them in hot water to remove the labels, and then putting the long taper candles in them, and setting them on a block of wood, so that the wax can flow down the sides of them for our wedding. Of course our wedding is going to be vintage themed, with patchwork quilting, fabric rosettes, and candles everywhere. Good luck to you! It will be beautiful!
P.s. You could also paint them white, and no one would know the difference!

Actually I have seen this at a wedding before, except they put Christmas lights in it and it was simply stunning when the lights were dimmed but they weren't as center pieces they were just surrounding the room and gift/card table. I think your idea will be just as lovely.
Best wishes!

I see nothing wrong with it. Maybe only because I've used wine bottles as vases and candle holders my whole life? I mean, it's not the classiest thing, but maybe that's not that important to you.
I would take away the mirror though, so overdone and not even pretty.

I love that kind of "rustic/homemade/shabby chic" look of mixing old and new - I'd totally use wine bottles as vases.
