ViewSonic monitor, and start up problems.?
I'm having problems with start up and then if I do get it going, it shuts off, after a while.
I managed to get the Recovery Disc to work and uploaded the new Windows Vista OP.
When I turn on the monitor, it signals Analog, shouldn't this be Digital, and how can I change that setting?
I've checked out all the drivers, and they all seem to be the latest and working fine.
I am currently updating the system, with 102 updates. lol
If anyone can help me out of this start up problem, and shut down, I would appreciate it.
The computer is a Gateway, desktop GT5656.
Thanks in advance.

It all depends on the monitor. It sounds like the monitor has multiple inputs (i.e. VGA & DVI). One of the buttons on the monitor itself should be the one that is used to select which input method is used. There are usually 3 options: Auto; Analog or D-Sub; & Digital or DVI-D. Some monitors can also have more like: S-Video; Composite; or HDMI. You'll need to figure out which button on the monitor allows you to choose which type of input you're using, as well as knowing which type of input your connected to. Analog would be the standard VGA cable connection (usually a blue connector). If you didn't change the input, then most likely it should be Analog.
If it works sometimes, but shuts off like you say, you may have a bad monitor, graphics card, or something else is failing depending on how & what is actually shutting off. There are many things in a computer that can cause a myriad of problems, and to find out what the main problem is would require troubleshooting it. There are too many things to do in troubleshooting to go into here.

Do you see the little power light on the monitor switch (in the lower hand corner)? If not, check the power cable. Do you have the monitor power cable plug into a power surge protector? Does it has a separate on/off toggle switch? Find a good power cable, and replace it. Plug it directly to a regular power outlet. Push the power switch on, what do you see or hear. If you do hear a sound, and the monitor does not turn on; the internal power (inside the case) has shutdown with bad transformer or other component. Buy a new monitor and get rid of the bad one. It costs more to repair than replace. Good luck!
