Would a German Shepard be ok with small Terriers & Shih Tzus in the same house?
A friend had to put down her beloved Mastiff due to a slipped disc.
She has tiny dogs but wants another big dog to walk and be her
watchdog & buddy. Mastiffs are big but mellow.
We understand GSD have high prey drive and that's what is the concern.
I know with training most dogs are fine, but I also seen a well trained
pit bull kill its Yorkie sister out of the blue one day. Never want to
see that risk again.

As long as the dog is raised with the small dogs it will be fine. The big dog will learn its boundaries and know how rough is too rough. I have a German Shepherd and a Chihuahua and they LOVE each other. He protects the Chihuahua all the time and they constantly snuggle. He never plays to rough either because the Chi taught him his boundaries when he was a puppy. He is not the first German Shepherd to live with my Chi.

You can't compare a GSD prey drive to a Pits predisposition toward dog aggression...and an owner's negligence regarding that breed. Anyway, if properly socialized and raised together a GSD would be fine with the smaller ones. However, it is always recommended when housing small breeds with larger breeds known for dog aggression or high prey drive to separate the dogs when you are not home to supervise play/interactions. That's just responsible dog ownership.

German Shepard's are no longer uncomplicated to coach, particularly the different. they seem to be a extremely smart and domineering breed. this ability they are an exceedingly in a position dogs (consequently their use as provider canines around the area) yet they have the aptitude to be a risky weapon in the incorrect palms. they choose good willed vendors that are arranged to be challenged. German Shepard's are additionally herders. If no longer impressive knowledgeable their instinct to herd might desire to actual be particularly risky on a horse holiday, as they have potential to be concerned your horse and reason it to bolt. of direction a German Shepard can stay with Shih Tzus' yet any p.c.. of canines might have scraps (in case you have 7 canines try to comprehend this). there is obviously an further danger whilst the size of the canines differes lots. you will ought to stamp down in this kind of behaviour and be very vigilant around the canines and assert your self by way of fact the chief of the p.c..

GSD are sucha loving dogs granted they do get a little aggressive they never go oer the line. I have a GSD who is year and 4 months but I also have a beagle who is over 2 yrs old, and even though the GSD is 3 times his size she is in total submission to that beagle, so its good that the older dogs are smaller bc most dogs go by seniority.

With proper socialization and training, a German Shepherd would do just fine. I have a German Shepherd with four cats! He adores them and would never harm them purposely.
