Can we know things that we can't explain?

I'm not talking about things that don't have any root in reality, but actual concepts and ideas based on facts. Can we just intuitively come to understand things and apply them to our life without having the words to describe them?

For example: You read a book and when you try to explain it to someone, language is inept. Yet, you KNOW that you understand the book and it has helped you in one way or another.
