How old does a kitten need to be to get fixed?

I have had lots of cats throughout my life but never a kitten. It is really my daughter's kitten & she never asked the vet how old the kitten must be to get fixed. So a rough age would be helpfull, I'm having her save the money for the proceedure & want to give her a time frame.

Mos vets use "6 months" as the gold standard but cats can reach sexual maturity as young as four months. In reality a kitten can be spayed/neutered as young as 6-8 weeks as long as they weigh about 2 lbs and are healthy. My female kitten Lucy got spayed at 7 weeks; since she had to be sedated for another minor surgical procedure anyway, the vet offered to go ahead and fix her at the same time. She was home the same day and did fine.

Kittens can be safely spayed/neutered as young as eight weeks as long as they're healthy and weigh two pounds. Unfortunately some vets still live in the Dark Ages and don't alter until six months. Don't wait - kittens can reach sexual maturity as early as FOUR MONTHS and a pregnancy that young can KILL a kitten.

Odd you're asking this, though. Have you not taken the kitten to a vet to be checked out and give her shots? Surely not or the vet would have told you this. That's the very first thing you should do whenever getting a new cat or kitten. And why didn't you adopt instead of getting this kitten "free" or wherever you got it? By the time you alter it, get it up to date on shots, deflead, dewormed, tested for FeLv and FIV and chipped you're looking at $300 to $400. Had you adopted you would have gotten a kitten with all or most of that done for an adoption fee of only $100.

edit: the idiotic thinking that a cat should have one heat first is why there's so many KITTENS ending up pregnant!

As soon as you can is the greatest time to get a kitten fixed.

I have had a lot of cats myself and my vet told me that they can be fixed as early as six months, but for a female they say she should come in heat at least once before spaying her and as for a male I have been told to keep them like a kitten you should fix them by six months of age before they get set in their ways. I hope this helped.
