Do i have the right to ask my GP for a full blood screen?

People have suggested to me that i should have a full blood screen, but i wondered if i have the right to request it or does my GP have to tell me i should have one? And also, what kind of information will a full blood screen reveal?

Thank you for your help. xx

Of course you have the right to ask for one. You don't have to wait for the GP to tell you to have one but whether you get one or not is a different matter. The NHS is not a bottomless pit of resources & these things cost money. You'll only get one if there's a genuine medical need.

You may ask your doctor, who may want to know why you are requesting these tests, and I feel if he doesn't feel you need them he will not sanction the tests, you can get private tests, (where I can only suggest you see a doctor in a private capacity) who then will charge you for the consultation and tests if he so requests the tests for you,.

It is all to do with cost effectiveness via the family doctor and also dictated by the health service.

Your full blood test will show most general problems or information the doctor requests.

Yes, of course you can request it, but your GP might be more likely to order a basic blood screening and then if anything shows up s/he might order more specific tests. Generally blood work looks at your white blood cell count, red blood cell count, function of internal organs, thyroid levels, iron level, and so on.

You have the right to ask for whatever you like but depending on why you want one will determine whether you get one if you are getting treatment from your doctor you can suggest it but if its just because chances are you won't get one as it costs money and its all about saving
