How do you maintain a backyard composter?

My mother-in-law gave me a composter for my back yard and set it up for me but didn't give me any further instruction.

Do you need to do anything to maintain it? Do you have to stir the contents every so often, or do you just throw your yard clippings and veg waste in there and it does it's own thing?

In our backyard composter we turn the contents ever so often so that heat will not build up so hot to ignite the contents of woodchips and such. The type compost you are using though is limited so that you should not have to worry about heat. Decompositioning due to decay and the continuimg buildup of the compost material should take care of itself in most store bought composters.

Hi Ely, I can only say what I do and how. I don't have a composter, I just do it myself. I keep 2 piles- one of grass clippings and one of sticks and branches. The grass clippings take a long time to break down, and I don't have to bother it until spring of the next year. Then I take a pitchfork and rake to move aside the top clippings, then dig deep to get the rich, black, fertile compost at the bottom. I use it in my flower beds and it works GREAT! Like free fertilizer! Finally, I rake the clippings back into place so they can get a start for the next pile. Pretty easy, really. I hope that helps with yours, even if it is a different set up.

We'd need to know what type it is.

Generally, yes, you add layers of dried material (leaves, grass, shredded newsprint, hair, etc.) and wet stuff (kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, fresh lawn waste, farm animal waste, etc.) and then rotate or stir it. It also needs moisture, but not too much. Too much and it will smell horrible; too little and nothing much will happen.
