Mahatma Gandhi - Was Mahatma Gandhi responsible for the present day never ending Reservation Quota?

Ambedkar declared that freedom of India does not mean freedom to low caste so he wanted separate electorate in which only low caste would elect their own representatives as MP/MLA . When Gandhi learnt this , he opposed Ambedkar and went on a fast till death. When his condition became worse , people persuaded Ambedkar to take back his demand and so Poona pact was signed and Gandhi gave up his fast ,but in lieu, Ambedkar made Gandhi to accept reservations for dalits & tribals, which Gandhi agreed.

Miss, you have quoted the historical facts but totally out of context. I am sorry for disagreeing with you. Dr. B R Ambedekar with along with flow with British policy of divide and rule and agreed to separate electorates for the dalits. This provision was introduced by British to successfully implement their policy of divide and rule in India and was successfully implemented for minority class in India. Mahata Gandhi opposed this provision siting this will disintegrate Hindu society, thus he went on hunger strike in Yerawada Jail in Pune. Thus Mr. Ambederal was forced to step back. Mr. Ambederak compromised on reservation for dalits in elections.

This was all in British India and in British India laws, it had nothing to do with Modern India and current constitution and current laws, However after independence reservation for dalits, was implemented and was supposed to be for limited period. That limited period was never defined qualitatively. The purpose of this reservation was to uplift the undermined class, however this became the tool for votes, and at present, no political party has will power to eliminate this caste based reservation system.

I don't think either Dr. Ambedakar or Mahatma Gandhi is to be blamed for this, but our present day politicians are to be blamed for this. Our historical leaders took best decision in the context of those days, but our present politicians exploit those decision for their benefits.

Most of the users has given good answers.

Neither Gandhi nor Ambedkar can be blamed.

Ambedkar wanted reservation to be abolished after a definite period, 10 years. But our present day politicians, have been using this as a tool to garner votes.

What good we had from Raja, Dinakaran or our honourable former Chief Justice KGB?

But i think it is the people who has to be blamed at present. They think Reservation as their birthright. They are ready to vote for the party, that gives quota to their caste. They never understands that it is a shame to get selected in colleges or in employments using your caste over talent.

Even if we get any leader who says reservation will be abolished, not only the political parties, but people from many parts of the nation will strike against this. Only if we get a strong leader and when people realizes this agony behind reservation, this evil will be stopped.

AG, historical contexts were different and not comparable with the current socio political setting! We have the Reserved Constituencies now anyway! What big improvement are the MLAs and MPs from Reserved areas able to do for their community? Or what have they achieved in the Assemblies or Parliament?

A Raja who became a powerful Cabinet Minister at the Centre, did not do a pittance to the SCs, his own community that still, by and large, suffers in penury! On the other hand he helped Kalaignar and Kani to share booties with him! Worse still, there are reports of land grabbing from his own community in Parambalur etc, on him!

And the more literate, august post holding Chief Justice Dinakaran - now facing impeachment proceedings - was also involved in grabbing govt and private lands!

Would not the soul of patriotic Ambedkar wriggle in pain in his grave, to hear all these acts of his SC leaders?

But it would be unwise to blame just the SCs when even the great Gandhian party (as congress prides in calling itself) had given the goby to dedication and probity in public life!

The sathyagraha of the Father of Nation is another much misused tool to achieve every parochial goal by parties!

So why only single out the Reservation? We have every aberration of Gandhian philosophy doing the rounds already!

No, this is a false story. A rumor.

Reservation Quota has been increased by the vested interest Politicians after Independence, by making amendments in Constitution.

State level Politics is more responsible for this menace.

Originally Constitution had given 7.5% Reservation to SC and 15% to ST. This Reservation was for 10 Years only.

But afterwards the State level Caste Politics came into play for regional Votes.

V.P. Singh added fuel to fire by implementing 'Mandal Commission' and everything went out of control.

People were forgetting caste barriers in Congress regimes. But Mandal Commission again divided them and did irreparable damage to the Indian Society.

Neither Mahatma Gandhi nor Ambedakar told that there should be reservation quota for indefinite period. It is cunning attitude of the politicians who are creating vote banks by playing B. C., O. B. C. and Muslims cards. It is shame that now some political parties including congress are making demand of reservations for Muslims. Nowhere in our constitution it is provided that Govt. should reserve any posts, seats in the name of religion. V. P. Singh crossed all the limits of playing dirty politics of reservation and situation became more and more worse after 1990. How Mahatma Gandhi or Ambedakar are liable to this?

Nothing prevented the present politicians from framing time limit. But no body wants to bell the cat for the sake of vote bank. There is no point in blaming the father of nation who has taken decision in the given context.

Pandora opened the box of reservation. Now no one can shut it till all the insects are out. Gandhi was surely one of the participants.

As you say , Gandhi was faced with a dilemma , he opted for lesser evil but that evil has attained monster shape due to very dirty politics of our country . We need best people to rule this nation of ours , instead we are ruled by people with average or less than average IQ !!!!
