I want to buy a VGA lead for my laptop, but my VGA port doesn't have those holes either side...?

The holes are for screws to fix the lead in place - not essential.

laptop VGA jacks don't usually have the retainers, so no need to screw in the thumbscrews. This is actually a safety feature; if the VGA cord was secured to the laptop, tripping over the cord would pull down the laptop. Unsecured, it's more likely just to pull free.

You mean the holes that just let you screw the cable in? Those are not necessary

yea they are just there if you need to secure it.

Doesn't matter if you don't it will still fit, it's a standard connection.
