My dog is has been constantly nibbling at his back and tail lately and the hair is coming off........?

He does not have fleas. I have seen this happen to dogs but I am not quite sure of the reason why. We have vet visit scheduled tomorrow but was looking for some insight.

Could be mites or allergies but your dog may also have dry skin. Just like with people, dry skin for dogs is itchy and very irritating. The vet should be able to give him something for it

I can tell you what is going on here, when a dog is itching, scratching, biting certain parts of their bodies it is from allergies either to what ever they lay on or the food they eat.

What ever goes into the body comes out in the skin, like humans.

but remember a dog eats almost the same foods daily where a human eats different foods.so allergies can develop over time causing the dog to itch, and bite.

Check your food you are feeding your dog, does it contain corn, wheat, soy, corn gluten, or possibly beef?

Dogs who eat grains develop itching over time and some people think it is flea related when actually it is the food.

a dog can eat the same food day after day and never have a problem till they get older then things start to appear out of no where.

Grains are some times not tolerated by a lot of dogs and even though it is ok to feed them on an occasion over time eating grains especially if the grain listed is 1st on the list of food ingredients on the bag grains cause allergies biting, tearing up of the skin because it bothers the dog.

What I can suggest is that you find a food that does not contain grains, instead use sweet potatoes which is tolerated more by dogs.

Go to your local Pet Store and ask for foods with out grains in them and you may pay more but over time your dog will not have this problem.

also too make sure your dog is not lying on grass to make him itch either as grass can itch dogs also.

Good luck the vet will give you antibiotics to clear up the allergies but please check your dog food.

I just took my dog to the vet for this very same thing, and it is classic allergies. Though she couldn't discern if it was food or environmental, so we put him on a hypo-allergenic diet for 2 months to see if it was a food allergy. You can give him some benadryl too.

    Good luck!!

My french bulldog has the same issue in his armpit region. You may try things like, changing the shampoo that you use, or he may have an allergic reaction to something he is around often. My bulldog's issue was the liner we put in his kennel. We removed it, hes fine. Try changing the brand and/or type of food, shampoo, etc. If it keeps up, take him to the vet.

unfortunately there are many many reasons for this. he could have parasites, not fleas, but mites or something you cant see, he could be allergic to any number of things. it may take some investigation to find out what it is if the cause isnt immediatley obvious to your vet.

There could be a skin condition or a reaction to something she has gotten in to. It could be simple to treat and then could be something big.

Have you had him checked for worms, or have you checked your house for bed bugs?
