How does an 18 year old get a pistol from someone over 21?

I am turning 18 and my parents are willing to buy me a pistol for my birthday. How would they do this? I know it is legal this way but I am not sure if there is paper work done at the store or somewhere else. I personally don't care for those who want to tell me that this is wrong and no 18 year old should have a gun. I want this for target shooting and for home defense since I live on my own now.

Update:

I dont need a permit because I live in AZ. I forgot that

It wouldn't hurt to ask someone at a gun store, but from what I gather as long as your parents are OK you can have a handgun at age 18

No paperwork required passing a gun from parent to child

I encourage you to search gunbroker or budsgunshop.com. When I turned 18 I bought my first Ruger 10-22 and a nice little .22lr pistol to go along with that. There is some controversy with buying a gun from your parents that they had no intention of keeping being a straw purchase so make sure you keep it all legal. Go pick the gun up with them and get all the warranty info. It should be really easy and I ordered online- was shooting the guns before the end of the week. Consider a 9mm or .22lr trainer. I'm deff getting a .45ACP when I'm 21 to carry but ammo is kind of expensive for an 18 year old college student.

ALSO AMMO IS REALLY TRICKY TO BUY. I just bought afew boxes of 9mm at walmart and my ID says not 21 in big print but I am 18 so it was okay to buy it as "Rifle Ammo". Your parents might have to help you buy ammo as well and you can just pass along the money. I never get carded when I'm with a family member but I like buying ammo on my own because it's nice to achieve it. Have fun and be safe.

There is no paperwork requried. Your dad goes into the store and buys it. Saying it is for him on the forms. Then he gifts it to you. That is it. Remember if you take the gun out into public you can't conceal the gun yet. I know you can conceal a weapon without a permit in Arizona but you have to wait untill you 21 before you can conceal. Once you turn 21 I still suggest you get a permit because it opens a few doors to where you can carry. When you have a permit you can carry into a place that serves alcohal for consumption or bars as long as you don't drink. Also state and local parks in az requrie a ccw if you want to carry in them. In the case of the bars you MUST keep it concealed.

Because I got in argument on here last time I said you can carry into a bar I am posting the law that sais you can. Also posting a FAQ from the Arizona Department of Public Safety's web sight.

Can I carry a firearm into an establishment that serves alcoholic drinks for consumption on the premises if I have a CCW permit?

Yes, unless the establishment has posted signs prohibiting weapons (A.R.S. 4-229). You may not consume alcohol while in possession of your firearm (A.R.S. 4-244). There are some additional exceptions see A.R.S. 13-3102.

Here is the law so you can read it yourself.

    It is unlawful:

    29. For any person other than a peace officer or a member of a sheriff's volunteer posse while on duty who has received firearms training that is approved by the Arizona peace officer standards and training board, the licensee or an employee of the licensee acting with the permission of the licensee to be in possession of a firearm while on the licensed premises of an on-sale retailer. This paragraph shall not be construed to include a situation in which a person is on licensed premises for a limited time in order to seek emergency aid and such person does not buy, receive, consume or possess spirituous liquor. This paragraph shall not apply to:

    (a) Hotel or motel guest room accommodations.

    (b) The exhibition or display of a firearm in conjunction with a meeting, show, class or similar event.

    (c) A person with a permit issued pursuant to section 13-3112 who carries a concealed handgun on the licensed premises of any on-sale retailer that has not posted a notice pursuant to section 4-229.

Also there is no registration of firearms in AZ so you don't have to worry about it being in your parents name.

Source(s): Stationed in AZ and conceal every day.

According to Federal law, your parents can purchase a firearm if they can possess a firearm and gift it to anyone that they desire as long as the person they give it to can legally possess the firearm. Federal law requires that you be 18 in most cases to own or possess a hand gun. I can't imagine that AZ law would be any different. There is no Federal age limit to own a long gun. I have been purchasing and giving long guns to my oldest son since he was 10. Over the years, I purchased two handguns with the intention of giving them to him when he turned 18, which I did. The last long gun that I got for him before he turned 18 was a Rem 700 SPS Varmint. He went into the store, checked on the availability, and negotiated a price for me. A couple of days later, I called the store, verified the price and had them order it. When it arrived, we went to the store, I filled out the 4473, was approved, paid for the gun and gifted it to my son while it was laying on the counter. Before he was 18, I would allow him to use my hand guns for legal purposes, such as checking fences and fields, trapping, and hunting.

If one of your parents are going to buy it- then there should be no trouble. Then will need to do a little paperwork at the gun store, but thats the end of it.

Believe it or not- I went to a engineering school in Baltimore MD back in 67-69. Two students wanted to buy guns and had to go through the school administration for permission. They got permission and got Ruger Blackhawks, a 357 mag and a 44 mag. They were allowed to keep the guns in their dorm rooms, but were requested not to load them on campus. One guy was 19 and one was 22. The school vp was a retired chief of police for Baltimore. Was this legal? I have no idea, but I'll bet you can't do that today.

There is only paperwork if you buy the gun from a shop or a licensed dealer. If you buy it from a private seller, there is no paperwork.

You will have to check your local laws for legality of you having a pistol where you are going to live. If you are going to college and living on campus, you won't be able to keep it there.

You would be advised to get a carry permit for the weapon too, if the state you are going to live in allows that.

You can buy a handgun via private sale in AZ.

if your parents buy it its going to be in there name you wont be able to legally own it till you turn 21 but if they buy and they are with you when you shoot it thats not a probleme but if you get caught with it without them u can get in trouble
